Hello All,

I know this topic has been covered before but just to clarify and confirm before i place my order...

I am looking to but a 660 and fit to my 2010 GSA but unsure of the best way to do this. I like the look of the 'new ZUMO 660 handlebar mount V2.0' from touratech to mount it onto the center strut windscreen support. Could anyone let me know if I would also need to buy the adapter (http://www.touratech.com/shops/008/product_info.php?products_id=4998) or if I could get away without it?

Also I understand that I will need a cable to connect to the CANBUS socket on my bike. Is this the only thing that I will need?

Any help would be much appreciated to make sure I have all of the bits to fit as soon as it arrives.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich,

I have a 550, and if the mount bits that come with it are the same as the 660, then you can use them to mount to the screen bar. As for power supply, I used the supplied fused cable, and spliced it into the power socket cable under the seat. I cut the cables just before the socket, and conected the zumo power cable to one side and then re-joined the cable to the socket. Saves buying anything extra. If you don't want to mess about like that, then either a din plug on the end of the zumo lead and plug into seat socket, or get a canbus conection lead for the plug near the headstock.

I got the advice of Steve at ram-mount.co.uk on this, you can mount it on the lower horizontal bar and use the rest of the enclosed bits to raise it up over the clocks, to the left.

"I have favoured LHS of the clocks so gps is inline with clock view, but just my opinion. The u-bolt cast bracket with shim adaptor, as a kit look at RAM-B-231Z, also wrap a bit of rubber around oval rail to get better grip. There are some images and also some posts of RAM-B-309-7 on the oval rail or square base plate at top of screen. RAM-B-309-7 does same job ad u-bolt, but the ball post is different position, so 1" u-bolt with shim RAP-319 should work."

You need to chop down the lead to just +ve and -ve supply (unless you want audio out/traffic receiver) and solder on a can-bus plug, then drop it down to the left of the screen and plug in to the spare socket in the loom under the oil cooler... (plug from Nippy's, but also a bmw part for less dosh, but you'll have to search for the polarity on here).

I'm a mechanical numpty, but can solder, and it took all of 10 mins once I had the right bits.

I recently connected a Zumo 660 to my 2008 1200 GSA. I used a CAN-Bus Plug from BMW and soldered it to the Zumo wires. make sure you get the polarity correct. Only two wires are used. The CAN-Bus socket on the 1200 GSA 2008 model is behind the oil cooler. I actually left all the wires from the Zumo the original length and connected in a Traffic FM Antenna. I also kept the in-line fuse, though with the CAN-Bus, it is not needed and something else to go wrong.

I used the TT adapter bar, which you show a link to and use a Zumo TT locking bracket. I don't know how strong this bracket is, as the newer more expensive one looks a bit more robust. However, the one that I have should stop the Zumo jumping out of it's cradle and becoming road kill.

Note that the GSA bracket is completely different to the GS screen bracket. I have the Zumo mounted high up so as to provide a clear view of the clocks, particularly the rev counter.

I didn't like the RAM Mounts, nor the BMW Mount, as they seem to have quick release cams and may compromise security. I did consider just fitting Stainless Steel bolts in place of the cam bolts and if you remove the Zumo when away from the bike, paying for fuel, etc. then security issues are going to be less of an issue.

The only problem I note is that when you fix to the screen, you cannot really change the screen angle without upsetting the view of the Zumo, particularly without the cam bolts.

Apart from the CAN-Bus plug, you will need some cable ties and some self amalgamating tape to ensure all the connections are waterproof. Self Amalgamating tape is commonly used to waterproof cable connections on satellite dish LNB's.

You might find THIS useful. Also note that in that thread there is a link by Wapping to another post with wiring details.

I have the Touratech support you refer to and the mount for my Zumo 660 albeit mine is the V1. By the time you add up the weight of that lot, hanging off the bracket, it is a recipe for vibration! I don't get a massive amount - if I did I'd look for another solution.

However, the main reason I stick with it is because if you mount the Zumo much further back you'll need to lean right forward to touch it and then your gaze starts to move down and if you're not careful your eye is off the road! :eek

I also wonder if it will mount straight onto the bar. The locking mechanism for the mount, which swings up when you unlock it, needs some clearance above it and I just question whether the screen will get in the way. A quick call to TT ought to clarify this.:rob

i have just fitted the v2 touratech mount. i also bought the black aluminium block from nippy normans that bolts onto the screen bar. with a bit of adapting it works well, just enough clearance to the screen to open the mount. the touratech mount (both v1 & v2) do not fit straight onto the screen bar, the diameter is different.

You can mount directly onto the bar using u-bolts.
This has worked well for me. No problem with clearance.

Hello All,

Many thanks for all of the replies. Think im all sorted now, going to mount it on a v2 mount from TT when it arrives. Also ordered the CANbus cable to connect it to the zumo. Does anyone have there Zumo connected to a autocom via bluetooth? Thinking of connecting phone to zumo via bluetooth then the garmin to the autocom again via bluetooth. Hopefully this will enable me to hear the sat nav through the autocom as well as receiving calls.

Anyone have there sat nav/autocom/phone set up like this? Does it work?

Thanks

Richard

Richard. There is plenty of useful info here. There are a couple of Zumomeisters on that forum.
Wiz set up my phone/autocom/PMR/zumo. Top man :thumb2

Hello Andy B and Oldrat.

Thanks for sending the info on security nuts, will defo be investing in some for my mount! Got to be worth it! Thanks for the link, order will be going in later on today!

Oldrat...the website you sent was VERY helpful and more than answered my questions. Should be a doddle to set up now (i hope).

Thanks again,

Richard

I've just mounted my Zumo using the BMW mount. Unheard of but it was only £36 ! Which compared to Migsel and others I've seen was a bit of a steal. It mounts on the adventure windshield brace like some others. Apparently BMW do a similar bar over the clocks for the GS which it can also mount to.

It also features adjust-ability, so if you move your screen - you can also move the Satnav orientation.

All sounds like an ad for BMW, but it seems to me the most economic solution. Which makes a change!

u bolts

You can mount directly onto the bar using u-bolts.
This has worked well for me. No problem with clearance.

Hi there
I'm new to the forum and saw a post you made a while back about your zumo 660
I want to mount my zumo in the same way - directly on to the bar using u-bolts
in the same way as you have
You couldn't possibly let me know where you got the brackets from could you?
many thanks in advance
Ed

ITS ALL IN THE BOX

IMHO you dont need anything other than what comes in the box with the zumo, connect included lead direct to the battery, only addition i bought was a lock for the mount (about £13)

Just fitted mine as per your instructions. Very easy. And thanks to a kind member for sending me the BMW cable.
