Hi all

I bought a 660 zumo last week, a friend who is a professional car phone installer spliced in the power wires into the socket wires on my 1200 GS.

I went to Belgium on Friday, all seemed well at first, but after stopping for fuel and starting the journey again the Zumo started to switch to the battery power mode, the warning would appear warning was about to switch off in 30 seconds or so, I would press the button to carry on in battery mode, then after about 4 or 5 minutes it would run on "mains" power for about 60 seconds before going through the same cycle continuously which was very irritating. It was a hot day and the unit seemed to be quite warm, I'm not sure if that was a factor.

I tried running the Zumo again yesterday, it was a lot cooler and I didnt run it for very long, about 50 minutes but the problem did'nt recurr.

I am wondering if there is a problem with the Zumo and I should return, or if the problem is linked to the bike? Any suggestions gratefully received? Anthony

If you turn the bike off the Zumo will remain on for about a minute or so and then switch off if it is wired into the accessory socket under the beak. If your Zumo is not charged it will keep the bike on and everything else until it is charged. It is a really stupid feature but that is the way they built them.

Thanks for the replies so far.

The bike is a 2004, one of the first imported, I have had no provblems, electrical or otherwise so far, touch wood, since I bought it new.

I may not have made it clear, it appeared as though the power is going off as I was riding the bike along the motorway, there was no recalculating or change from the pre programmed route which might have triggered the change. The message on the zumo indicating it was on battery power would appear, I pressed the option to stay on, then at around 4 minutes it would power up for around 60 seconds before repeating the process.

I'm sure 99.9 % sure that the wiring is connection is not a problem, my friend knows what he is doing, he stripped the wires and soldered the connections. It was'nt a random intermittent fault it appeared to switch on and off at regular intervals.

I can't understand how the power could keep coming on and off as I was riding and so I am wondering if it is a fault with the Zumo unit?

I thought it might be an '04 bike. Have you had it from new and do you know the ECU update history? There was one particular update which caused the accessory socket to shut itself off at regular intervals.

I had this very problem on my '04 bike. The cure is to have the ECU flashed with the next update which fixes the problem. It'll necessitate a trip to your local, friendly, BMW Motorrad dealership to have the bike hooked up to the GT1 to interrogate the ECU and install the latest updates.

However, in the first instance it might be worth finding someone local who uses a 660 and asking them to try yours on their bike to see if it still demonstrates the same fault.

HTH

Thanks for that, I have had itr from new and it has always been serviced with the dealer who sold it. I will take it back to them in the first place.
