Hi guys, Looking for advice to a problem with my new Zumo 660. It was working fine in the house, but I had to open the battery compartment again to install a SD Card. Replaced battery & cover, but now unit is giving a start up message of "Close Battery Cover", and it will not proceed further. It is not frozen as it responds to the on/off switch. It feels OK mechanically.

I have tried holding my finger on the bottom right hand side of the screen on start up for reset, removing the battery, holding the on/off switch for 8 seconds or more, but nothing seems to clear this error.

It could be hardware error, but also possibly a software error, though Gawd knows why Garmin deem it necessary to interlock the battery cover. People buy this unit because it is waterproof and are hardly going to leave the cover off - we're not complete cretins!

Anybody seen this error and know how to clear it? I don't see anything in the manual. Maybe it needs a software/firmware flash, but it is software version 4 already.

Never had that problem. Presumably the battery cover is in fact seated correctly? Plus the stating-the-obvious of... no possibility that any part of the cover is broken? - There must be some part that latches a switch so it knows the cover is on or off.
Any possibility that the release switch mechanism is not fully returning? Mine has quite a stiff action.

Can't see anything untoward where the battery cover mates with the case, so if there is a switch interlock, I guess it is inside the actual case attached to the battery cover release slider.

Everything appears to be fully seated and the release slider returns fully home. I'm just wondering if the software controlling this has gotten confused - maybe I accidentally switched the unit on while taking battery out or putting it back, but the software can't be up to much if something simple like that can disable the unit.

Oh, where is Ice Station Zebra in Fife? I used to live in Fife.

Just tried mine. Works with the door removed - as long as the metallic pin is in proximity. Magnetic presumably? Even with the door rotated 180, as long as the pin gets within about 4mm of the correct place, the warning goes from the screen and maps start up as normal.
The pin hasn't gone missing?

- Tayport. Near the Weather Station.

Hi ghiribizzo

Thanks. I cannot see any metallic pin. I see a couple of cross head screws on the cover at the end nearest the cover/door release catch, but they seem to be holding the double lock lug onto the battery cover/door.

Where is this metal pin - that sounds like it could be something to check - as you say a magnetic switch? How is it fastened in place? Don't know if this Zumo 660 is exactly the same as yours - it is about 2 weeks old.

I used to live in Aberdour which is on the Forth.

Um... Other end of the door from where the cross head screws are. If the release catch with screws is nearest you - then the other end has the pin. Outside the sealing lip there are 4 narrow locating pins and two wide, then two narrow (L-R).
Inside the sealing lip (L-R) there are 3 ribs, then a moulded u-tube (with the pin) and then two more ribs. The pin is quite obviously 'shiny'.
Fiver says the pin fell oot! Presumably held there with a spot of glue?

Ah, Aberdour Station... best in the Country!

I think you are spot on there. The battery door doesn't have a shiny pin in it the other end but there is a round hole about 2mm diameter where it might have been. I tried a magnet nearby it and the error message disappeared.

Thanks very much.

Now the problem is to find another pin. Will try and email Garmin Europe. Garmin Germany don't seem to speak any English and my German is not adequate. email does take a few days but they answer eventually.

Thanks again for your help :thumb2.

Aberdour Station used to win all the prizes for the best kept station as the station master (I think a Mr MacBeth) had a greenhouse and was very keen on planting flowers there.

I think the existing Station Master still does a bit but it's only part time manned if I remember from my last year's visit. So cannot really expect to maintain the previous standards.

Yaay! Next step is to get the magnet around where you had the cover off, putting in the card in the hope it'll find the pin... Dear oh.:flag

Don't think I will find the magnet. Swept the floor around the area I think I may have lost it. Will be vacuumed this morning so can check the contents. But I think it is an SOS to Garmin!

Try another magnet around where you lost it. The 2 magnets will attract each other. This will work also if you have alot of dust in the vacumn

Garmin are sending a replacement battery door, so hats off to them, though I think I will be putting a spot of epoxy to set the pin permanently into the door. Didn't find the magnet where I think I lost it, but really it is very small so little chance of success there.
