I very quickly reinstalled the maps again, then hopped about in the very awkward My Garmin.... unlocked the maps again.... and BINGO! Let's hope they stay in Basecamp this time.....

I'm always torn on the arguments for and against, but next time I update, I will definitely be leaving it running.

I have just updated and installed maps from 2011.10 to 2012.30 on both PC and GPS in less than 2 hours.
This time i purchased direct from Garmin uk, and not from a dealed, and i had absolutely no problems. . Makes you think don`t it !.

I am having some similar problems with this latest update, although my Zumo 660 does not lock up.

Although the Garmin Tech Support guy didn't say anything about the latest update mapping files being bigger, the Zumo, which was supposedly up to date already, now won't accept the same update and prompts me to load only a subset of the whole European Mapset.

The reason I am trying to re-update was that LifeTimeUpdater is doing my head in saying that new updates are available, even though the Zumo 660 and the PC are showing fully up to date.

Had a talk with the Garmin Tech Support and they advised:

Garmin Life Time Updater is flaky and may crash 90% from end of update process. Best to use Map Updater instead.

To make more space, delete unwanted Voice Files.

Can delete the two large Image files and then reinstall with Map Updater.

Windows Explorer shows 400 odd megabytes space before deleting the two large Map Image files. It looks like the Garmin is not seeing all the available free storage space?

I can load a part of the Map Set, say Western Europe, but then when I load North Eastern Europe, etc. to add the rest of the detail, I loose the Western Europe file detail!

I was thinking of doing a Zumo reset to clear memory/correct the memory reading, but it is not frozen and I don't want to loose the Favourites & Address Book file. I know I will loose my home and other personal details on a hard reset.

Having read through this thread, it sounds like the updated maps are quite a bit bigger than the previous version (even though Garmin did not admit this).

Anybody tried doing the Hard Reset and if so, did it free up any memory storage space?

Your Favourites are only Waypoints.

Import them into Mapsource from the device. Then send them back when you have
made your hard reset. I have done it lots of times as it's easier to edit them on a PC.

Oh bloody hell, this is becoming ridiculous....I closed down Bascamp to make a cup of tea....

I come back, relaunch Basecamp and now the 2012.03 maps have vanished! No longer available as an option on the Maps dropdown button even.... How can something be installed, run, be used and then vanish? I can see the trial route folder I made and the route flags I created but the detailed 2012.03 map has gorn into thin air leaving me with just the basic base mapping.

Hi Wapping - make sure that the maps are installed to your Mac as well as the GPS unit. When you connect your GPS to Basecamp the latest map WILL become available until you disconnect it then it will disappear. If you always download to both Mac & GPS then the maps will be there whiner you use Basecamp with or without the GPS.

New zumo 660 user.....totally confused!

Ok so here's the thing....just given up on street pilot as mapping updates and storage capacity causing too many difficulties.
Have taken the plunge and bought a NOH 660 unit from satnaveasy and navigated my way through the process of getting my 2012.40 map upgrade (free) which wasn't easy as I had to contact Garmin for the update to be added to my account as the first fix date cannot be reset on NOH units.....don't expect after sales responses from satnaveasy!

So I have now downloaded the update to pc (was told it was too large for device)...and now need to transfer maps to device.....but still told they won't fit with only 300mb or so space available? Clearly something I wrong here, how do I clear the unit for install? And why doesn't software manage this?
I'm hopingnI don't regret the upgrade, just feel like I've spent a load of money nd face the same old issues?

Any quick pointers would be gratefully received as Garmin instructions/manuals are very vague?

I can't help you Mac but I can empathise as I am the owner of a Zumo550 and faced similar problems when downloading the latest mapping.

It is disgraceful that Garmin produce units with such small hard drive capacity that they are unable to hold subsequent mapping fully. It isn't as if these items are cheap in the first place is it?

Didn't anyone at Garmin think that mapping might get bigger and drives should at least have some update capability?.............it would appear not.

I could only download Western Europe to the unit last week and just didn't bother with the rest to be honest.

It really isn't good enough.

There might be some tips here to help you, otherwise I suggest you talk with Garmin Support and point them to this thread to encourage them to document the procedure.

Mac - have you formatted the SD card - if card has not been formatted, then that might be why the Zumo doesn't recognise it.
On my Mac, if I connect up the Zumo, it shows both the Sandisk card, plus of course the Zumo itself. You can drag MP3s etc to the card perhaps, and then see if Zumo recognises it.
Good Luck - I find Garmin to be a strange company with regard to software , and don't get me started about Road Trip ......

Card isn't referencable from with map source but will check if if I can access directly from the PC file browser.
I still don't understand how I can send maps to the card, but perhaps if it needs formatting then map sure will identify the option when it is?

Keep the comments coming ...... And I'll post the response from "Will" at Garmin when received......he's been helpful with free update issues so far.......it does reflect on Garmin though when you are on first name terms with their support guys!

Ok so I'm a little further down my learning curve and understand some of the differences between the street pilot and zumo units now. Used map installer to get the 2012.40 maps onto my sd card, and these are accessible on my unit now.
So, in the map settings, I can deselect the original maps including the "3D" maps? Should I do this or leave them active alongside the new maps? There is no option for new version 3 D maps.....so what does this mean?
Haven't test driven the new maps yet? So don't know what the outcome will be with maps selected/deselected......

OK so here's a question I didn't consider....
If I ask map installer to put new maps onto the unit itself does it overwrite the original maps? I didn't try that......having had capacity warnings previously for map installs, I just jumped straight to installing maps to the sd card......
So many questions and so few answers......if only life was simpler......

I assume that you're talking about MapInstall, the Garmin program used to write mapping on your PC or Mac to your GPS or SD card? If that's the case then no, you won't get that latest 3D buildings of Junction view data.

MapInstall creates a GMASUPP.IMG file, this is the supplementary mapping. An official Garmin update done using their web updater creates a GMAPPROM.IMG file which is the primary mapping. Using MapInstall to write to the internal memory of your GPS will not replace the this but try to fit it into any remaining space which there's likely to be very little of.

Simple solution is to write mapping to an SD card or memory stick, rename the resulting GMASUPP.IMG file to GMAPPROM.IMG and then replace the one on your GPS with that. I suggest copying the GMAPPROM.IMG file from your Garmin as a precaution before attempting this. Try at your own risk, done right it does work though.

I had to delete all bar the English & German voices (transferred others onto a 16GB SD Card in the Zumo) and accidentally deleted the sample Garmin Safety Camera Databases, but also have a SCAMERA Database installed.

Everything now fits OK, but I was told that future map updates will likely be even bigger as mapping details in eastern Europe countries improves.

It should be possible to direct Garmin to store maps on the SD Card also but I am not sure how this works yet, but it must be possible as you can buy additional Garmin maps on an SD Card.

I have a stack of MP3 files, etc. on the SD Card and these are automatically accessed by Garmin and can be seen using Explorer when connected to the PC.

Garmin recommended using MapInstall and not the Garmin Lifetime Updates, which is said to be buggy.
