Zumo 660 Version 3.80 as of may 17 2010

So from Hooray, to Haroo? How long had it been running before shutting down? Any identifiable reasons behind it (lost signal in tunnel etc)?

TBH if it's a good improvement, even if not perfect I'll probably give it a go, as there are lots of things in 3.80/3.90 I like. I had to back out to 3.50 but miss more map etc.
cheers

I installed 3.90 last night before I went out. Used it during the evening - turned it on and off a few times and it all worked perfectly.

I used it on the way to work this morning - did a few 'cold' starts by taking the battery out and replacing and it shutdown twice. I'm just about to e-mail back the Garmin the shutdown codes.

Well if they have added in some trace code, that's got to be a good thing in identifying the dodgy s/w. Let's hope they can identify the code problem and get a fix out soonish.

Thanks for the update mate.

cheers

Got It

I think that's because you missed the "Set Location" step.

You have to turn on GPS Simulator, then it will allow you to do the Set Location trick and find your Co-ords :thumb

On the 660 it's:
Tools/Settings/System/GPS Simulator/On :)

My mate needed coordinates of a number of favourites that I had saved. (to save him time looking for a few hard to find spots) and having switched on the GPS Simulator and followed the steps in 101. BINGO!!!:beerjug:

Well worth the subscprition fee alone!!!

Did the firmware upgrade at the weekend inadvertently whilst upgrading the maps via the upgrade manager (due to lack of attention error). I'd taken out the SD card to load more music on, so there wasn't an issue of it being in the unit whilst upgrading. All seemed to go well, and I checked that 3.90 was the firmware version, but then when I plugged the unit back in to the PC a few moments later, MyGarmin said there was another software update, and made the unit go through another firmware upgrade cycle.
The unit then froze, but on disconnecting from the PC and doing a hard reset, seemed to work OK, but the firmware version was still 3.90. Wierd.

I put the SD card back in (it's an 8gb), and it still seemed to work ok.

Went to Birmingham and back yesterday, 220 miles in (mostly) driving rain and the Zumo never missed a beat.

The software versions on it are:
GPS - 2.90
DSP - 2.30
Text - 2.30
Voice - 2.0

I guess that's the same for everyone following the 2.90 upgrade?

The text isn't the up-to-date version. Mine's currently on 2.80.

Hi All. Been having a similar problem with shut down myself. I discovered it happened when I tried to send a particular route to my zumo, it happened before and after updates and with or without SD card. The route was a larger file size than any others, thought it might have been a corrupt file so re-planned the same route, same problem. Decided to plan the route in 2 sections to reduce file size, problem solved. Works perfectly now, off to pyrenees this weekend so fingers x'd (bought some new maps just in case tho).

I've now given up on this issue:

  • Garmin replaced my Zumo
  • They had my SD card and pawed over it for a couple of weeks
  • I bought a new SD card
  • I deleted all routes and waypoints on both the card and the unit
  • I upgraded to v3.90 software

.... and it still often shuts down on startup (when it's looking for sats).

Garmin have been aware of the continuing problem ever since the v3.90 'fix' was released. I really don't think they know how to properly fix this.

:(

Just used it all around, to and from the south of France for two weeks.

Behaved itself with exemplary manners, in the car.

Greg: Do a Master Reset. That will usually fix your problem

1. With power off, touch the lower right screen corner with a pencil eraser

2. While holding the lower right corner turn on the power. Do not hold power button down but continue to hold the screen

3. Once you see a confirmation screen answer YES

You will now be back to the factory default settings with a fresh Zumo. Simply reset your settings and let usknow if that fixed it.

My 660 seems to have the autoshut down every hour (about) in the car. Have done the MR and checked with myGarmin / webupdater that it's running the latest software. Only way to get it back to life is to remove the battery, and then it's happy for the next hour or so. I'll post up the error messages from the screen that you get after pressing the compass rose for 8 seconds in a day or two, but have noted that some of the events are in 1999!

Right! The 660, is it still the one to have or are you all saying buy something else and if so what?

That's what I hate about forums, you get to hear about stuff!!:aidan

Old saying mate - if it aint broke - don't fix it!

I love my Zumo 660 and have just ordered another one from HANDTEC - however I still use Ver. 3.5 and will stick with it... and probably "downgrade" the new one to 3.5 as well. Mines totally stable! :thumb

The Zumo 660 is a really great unit and I'm sure that, eventually, Garmin will fix the problem. As GoosePilot suggests, the v3.50 software seemed to be totally stable. Even though you'd lose a couple of features it may be the way to go.

Been using mine for three or four weeks now (v3.90 software downloaded) probably 1,000 miles or so, on the 'bike .... behaved impeccably :thumb

Have to say though that I've gone back to standard/normal view :)

New software version downloaded with maps update!

I've been ignoring the software update since reading all about the problems with 3.80 (I'm on 3.50).

At the weekend I was notified of a maps update (i've subscribed to lifetime updates!) and i duly connected the 660 up and left it running downloading the latest maps.

Several hours later when i got home and checked the 660 I discovered that it had also installed the 3.90 software :blast It hadn't apparantly given me an option to accept or refuse the software update

But, you know, it actually seems to work fine. i tried it on a 90 minute car journey and all seems well :clap

Like Micky - I've gone back to the original format screen.

Just got my replacement Zumo 660 delivered and note it has version 4.00 software. Not found any differences yet but maybe they have solved the shutting off problem.

Incidentally, usual great service from Garmin. While on holiday the Zumo shut down a couple of times and I found the on/off button was sticky and needed a few prods to turn it on. Phoned Garmin when I got home to ask if the sticky button could be cleaned and they just said "send the unit back and we will send you a new one". I told them it was out of warranty and they said "no problem".

New Zumo delivered by courier 4 days later. The old one had a well worn case and badly scratched screen so a new unit for the £2.00 it cost to send it back is a pretty good deal.

Well done Garmin.
