zumo + canbus = flash

My completely un-informed guess would be that the HID ballast could be the culprit ? Maybe current is being inducted to the earth rail from the ballast. Could this then be messing with the canbus LAN, as power would then be traveling along the earth rail, particularly on shutdown of the ignition, ie the ballast is discharging ?
If this is the case, then might be worth checking where you have the earth side of the ballast connected.
Or I might be talking utter B****X of course.:jibber

earth side of the ballast is going via the OE lighting circuit.

but, but, but, if it was an HID ballast issue, why does it only do it when the zumo mount is connected?

No electrical expert, but could the zumo being fitted somehow produce a reverse current flow in the HID's only when the ignition is off? I'll guess there's capacitors somewhere inside the HID's, and we know what happens when they discharge.

So I'll guess it might be something like the old points on engines which produce the spark when the magnetic flux collapses.

Flash

My 2005 1200 used to do this and the only electrical change that I made to the bike was to fit an LED brake light. Possibly it isn't a Zumo, HID etc issue but is something to do with a shutdown routine in the embedded software?

but it only does it with the zumo mount plugged in, so that must have some bearing on the issue :nenau

Ah-ha

What I was trying to say is that it may not be Zumo or any other device dependant but is a Canbus issue.

Anyway I cured it on mine by trading it in:):)

What I cannot understand is why it flashes with the 660 mount, but not with the 550 or the old BuMW Nav III? All mine were wired in via the headstock dedicated socket, so no changes there and no flashing.

What has the Zumo 660 mount / device brought to the party that the other two devices didn't have? :nenau

dunno, but i think i'm just going to wire it across the battery and forget about it.

played with it again today

i discovered, unlike wapping, only my low beam flashes. doesn't matter where the hi/lo switch is.

a small auxiliary load across the feed to the mount solves the problem entirely. i used a 1.2W dash bulb in a test light.

anyone got any good ideas as to what i could use instead of a lamp?

In the interests of science I have been busy in the lab.

(1) Ignition on, no 660 in cradle, ignition off. Lights flash - see film (breezy here by the Thames) flash at about 1:03

(2) Ignition on, 660 in cradle, ignition off. Leave 660 in cradle. Lights do not flash, or at least do not seem to.

(3) Ignition on, 660 in cradle, ignition off. Leave 660 in cradle for, say two minutes then remove. Lights flash (see 1 above)

(4) Ignition on, no 660 in cradle, engine fired up, ignition off. Lights flash (see 1 above)

(5) Ignition on, 660 in cradle, engine fired up, ignition off. Leave 660 in cradle. Lights do not flash.

(6) Ignition on, 660 in cradle, engine fired up, ignition off. Leave 660 in cradle, for say two minutes. Remove 660. Lights flash. (See 3 and 1 above).

Clearly the presence or absence of the 660 in its cradle dictates whether or not the lights flash after the ignition is turned off. Why :nenau

Holy sh*t! Paranormal activity .. Have got to check mine .. :hide

canbus doesn't switch off with 660 fitted.

I have just tested mine (1200GSA) as I recently wired in the 660 mount to the canbus.
I don't get flashing lights but.. the canbus system just doesn't switch off with the 660 in the mount, it is fine with no 660 in the mount.

  • Fit 660
  • switch on ignition (660 pwrs up)
  • switch off ignition and watch led on autocom - it nevers goes out, nor does the 660 lose pwr.
  • remove 660
  • wait 1 minute and canbus pwrs down
Very odd, not sure if this is a bad thing as at least the zumo won't power off when I am paying for petrol... but it shouldn't be like that so gonna put in a call to BMW as it must be a ECU/Canbus software bug.

Ever get to the bottom of this, my 500 appears to keep the canbus live as witnessed by the hazard light switch glowing red long after it should have gone bye byes!:(

no, and i no longer have the bike.

i began to suspect the flashing issue is related to having a sumo + the OEM alarm system. just a suspicion though.

hang on though, you're talking about a different issue though, aren't you?

like the old one, the new bike powers the sat nav from a socket on the beak. no problems with that at all :)
