Just bitten the bullet and decided to go for the lifetime map update for my 660. Given that I haven't updated since I bought it and its V 2010.10.3D how long is this likely to take as I don't seem to be making much prgress after 30 minutes downloading?

It depends on your download speed. ISTR that the last time I did it on my 24 mbps connection it took about 3 hours.

On a reasonably quick connection.... about two to three hours, to complete the PC update and the device's update.

Ok well guess i'll just open a bottle Chivas Regal that the in laws bought me and enjoy the wait. Richard maybe the new maps will ensure I manage to follow you on the next outing without my Zumo telling me to turn into fields?

You do know that it's the 'lifetime' of that specific unit, rather than you getting updates until you die, don't you?

I bought my daughter a Nuvi for Xmas and updated the lifetime maps for her on a 10mbps connection. No mapsource involved, only a map change and it took at least 3 hrs, maybe 4hrs incl one stage when I thought that it had crashed. It hadn't crashed, just clicking and whirring behind the scenes.

Brian old buddy,

I had to do mine twice as my lifetime update didnt work first time, each one took 12 hours

Just to warn you...

If you're using the new live updater plug-in, the chances are (unless you're really savvy) that when and if it all works, you'll end up with new maps on your Z660 but not on your PC (Mapsource). To get both, you need to go into options BEFORE starting the download and click that option (download to both). Why the feck that isn't the default, rather than unit only, is beyond me.

You can always, later, download AGAIN to PC only to match 'em up. But that's more hours, more MBs download, more electricity and more wine...! Hey Ho.

or...your 660 could freeze while near the end of the process, putting the latest mapping on your unit, but leaving the old mapping on your mac (TWICE!), even though you've checked the relevant buttons on their fucking useless Lifetime* Updater app

if i run the updater again, it tells me everything is up to date. this has left me in the position of not being able to see a way of updating just the maps on the mac to match the unit.

when it comes to software, garmin really are a useless bunch of fuck monkeys.

*the likely duration of the updating process.

There is an option on installer when you are up to date to reinstall maps, I used this the other day to get my PC maps in sync with the device, took 2 hours start to finish.

done it twice now, and it screws up every time.

currently following instructions from zumo forums for manual install.

Hi Chaps,

I did the lifetime update to the 2012.30 the other night and like a lot of other people here was suprised to find it only updated the maps on the 660 :blast

After much head scratching I realized with the help of the comments in this thread to go into "installation" ( in the column on lhs ) in the download box and you are given three options there, if I can remember them :-

1.Update unit only ( this is the default setting - go figure?? :nenau )
2. Update unit and mapsource maps on pc ( this should really be the default setting surely? )
3. Update mapsource maps on pc only ( don't need 660 connected for this option )

I checked option 3, you need to click this button before you initiate the download and it seemed to work ok, about 1hr 15 mins to install, so now I have both the 660 and my mapsource maps on version 2012.30 :JB

It would be a lot easier if the Garmin download service came up with these option as "pop-up" boxes to save you doing the download twice!

I have a question though??

Can I delete the old 2010 mapsource maps to save disk space or will that screw up all the routes I have generated on the 2010 basemaps??

Cheers,

Poucher

Yes, you can delete old maps from your PC, quite safely.

Just take a little bit of care that you do not delete the original Mapsource file / (undetailed) base map at the same time or you will need to relaod the CD (along with the unlock code).

You can delete all the old mapsets using control panel, add or remove programs, assuming you're using windows.

I did it on my netbook as they take up a lot of space when you've got half a dozen or so old ones hanging about. My old routes all seem to open and work OK.

Uhh.........I think I'd better leave well alone here, this gives me loads of potential to screw things up again! :(
