Hi all.
Going to buy a zumo satnav but want to know if it can be powered off the USB port on my GS?
I have looked at the manuals for it (xt and 356 etc) but it does not say.
I will not use it very often so didnt want to “hard wire it” as such.

Any help appreciated.

It might help if you specify: which Zumo between the two (and the etc.)

The XT requires a >2A power source from the USB. Otherwise it won’t charge properly.
Hardwiring is generally easier to handle.

Thanks.
I was thinking the zumo 346 will be ok for my needs.

I've always owned Zumo models for my bikes. I remember trying so many times to solve the same problem you have, powering Zumo from USB. When I purchased my new 1250GS back in January, the problem came to me again, as new 1250GS doesn't have 12v plug by the handlebars. I know Garmin sells especial cable to power your Zumo by USB but besides cable being very expensive, you lose resistance to moisture and water ingress because the rubber cover of USB plug has to be open. Then, depending on your model of Zumo, you may not be able to put the unit into its holding bracket because of the usb cable connected.
You cannot use just any USB cable because the unit will think it's connected to computer and enter file transfer mode. That is why you need Garmin special USB cable. There are some hacks if you use standard USB cable, from cutting one of the pins to plugging/unplugging USB cable while unit is booting up to trick it out.
For me, it was too much hassle so I purchased Wunderlich bracket to install DIN plug on the left side of TFT, also purchased DIN plug for panel mount and DIN connector that I soldered on the end of Zumo's bracket cable (instead of hard wiring it onto the bike).

Hi Bosnjo, that is exactly what i was after, thank you.
Do you have a few photos or links to the Din plugs etc you mentioned.?
Thanks again.

Well you are gonna laugh…
I have read everything, watched the video and i still dont get what it does !!!

I beleive it is to hard connect for usb hub, but the not sure if usb cable from hub will give what you need.

I don't know if you have 1250GS without DIN (Hella) connector on the dash. As mine doesn't have DIN connector on the dash, only bellow the seat, I have purchased this:

https://www.nippynormans.com/screens-deflectors-and-winglets/higher-and-wider-screens/wunderlich-din-socket-holding-bracket

Then you wire it just as you would do it if you hard-wired your Zumo bracket. In my case, I run wire from EzCan.

I tried to post here links from AliExpress but they don't work so I had to erase them.
Just go to AliExpress and search for BMW DIN PLUG and then BMW DIN MALE PLUG.
The bracket link works.
