Not sure if anyone else experiences this....

If I ignore the directions and the thing does into recalculating mode, I quite often get a blank screen with "drawing..." in the top corner. The directions continue at the top of the screen and all else seems to function but I can't see any map. Switching on & off seems to clear it but hard to do on the move continually.

Anyone experienced this?

Mine use to do that before I put an addditional memory card in it...
Have you got its internal memory loaded up with routes, tracks & music or is its memory empty
A good web site for advice is zumoforums.com

Yeah mine does it. Turning it off and on again sorts it most times. Once had to remove the battery.

Mine does it, or at least used to.

Switching the unit on and off is only a temporay fix.

The solution is to switch the garmin Speed cameras off - they're crap anyway, use the PGPSW one's instead.

It was the speed cams on the M1 around Nottingham which triggered my fault.

Yeah, my 550 also freezes - but only when I'm on the M1 - roughly around Nottingham.

How odd. That's where mine went last, on the way to a friends funeral in Mansfield. Speaking to a mate after the funeral, his went there too.:nenau

Seconded! I reported it to Garmin as mine used to do this on the M42 / M6 junction. They said it was to do with the speed cameras and a known bug - turned them off and no more probs.

I have had 2 X 2720, 550 and 660. They have all frozen at some time but not often enough to be a major problem as turning off and on normally fixes it - apart from the 550. This has needed the battery removing as the on/off button froze as well so it's a good idea to carry a hex key in the bike tool kit.

All better than the multiple problems my wife and I have had with Tomtom Rider though!

Just try turning the Zumo off using the top left hand button (+) & the on/off button at the same time. Usually stops you having to take out the battery.

Just seen this update on the Garmin website.......http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1907

Change History
Changes made from version 4.70 to 4.80:
Corrected an issue that could cause the map to stop updating when approaching specific safety camera locations in the UK.

Interesting. I can identify wiht allof the above. Had a power problem with my unit and got the 'Map redrawing' problem...... and on the M1 around Nottingham! Garmin have just sent me a brand new unit. First time out crashed again on route. Had to reboot several times before it worked again. Crap! On a hunch I wondered if it was to do with the card so took it out completely. Have used it a few times since without card in and its been fine. Was just about to send back to Garmin again but I'll up date to 4.8 and see if that sorts it. It really is a bummer when it crashes and you rely on it. I've got used to not bothering with paper maps now. Only just moved over from 2610 which I have ot say in some respects is better eg there is now way you can keep up with the estimated time of arrival time in either car or bike without seriously breaking the law. On the 2610 at least you could set average speeds for different roads. Otherwise its a good system.

Further: - had a look and sure enough I have 4.7. Now I could get annoyed here as I was sent my brand new replacement unit last week with 4.7 installed! I note 4.8 release date 22.09.09! I'm a Mac user and use the supplied Garmin Road Trip software. Trouble is the update to 4.8 requires a PC I think. Have emailed Garmin my frustation. This is not a cheap system so should work without these problems. There are a lot of us uisng them. I reckon anyone else (all those above +) who experience problems like this should give their customer services a hard time as you can be sure I will be doing.
