Thinking about a 640 Adventure - advice?

I am wondering whether there's space in my garage for a 640 Adventure - It's a bike I've lusted after for so long that I'm beginning to think this is not just a crush, it's THE REAL THING.

I know a few of you have these - please could anyone offer an idiot's guide? What are the differences in the engine variants, what improvements were made over the years, which is the one to go for, which mods are essential, etc?

Maybe you know where there's one for sale...?

PS budget dictates it'll need to be at least a couple of years old.

A friend may be selling his, 05 plate, plenty of extras, FKTMSH to 15,000 miles, now on 18,000 miles. He lives on the Scottish West Coast.

Brian Eland has one for £1,500. It's an 01 but badly scuffed apparently. I nearly went for it before getting the 650 Dakar.

These Adventures are very few and far between. Riders get them, fall in love with them, and keep them.

That sounds like the one that's on ebay, is he in Lochailort?

Looks like a really nice example, but it ends today so too soon for me.
