I am think about getting a second hand textile jacket, and wondered if the whole thing could be washed or just the lining

I've washed Gore-tex jackets in the past - Take out the armour obviously.

No ill effects.

EDIT - Actually it's the liners that were Goretex and I didn't wash them.... :blast

I've washed every textile I've ever owned. Including down jackets.

Just follow the instructions on a label or on the side of one of the textile washing products. Tumble drying after washing restores that nice 'new' water repellancy you get, but it soon wears off.

Yes I've washed jackets and trousers in the past without any problems. I was told not to use washing powder as it effects the waterproofing :nenau

I wash my bike gear from time to time and the only thing I take out is the armour. This is Goretex btw. Following advice from a number of Goretex suppliers (eg walking kit as well as bike kit) I only use NikWax Tech Wash and following the instructions I run the washer through a rinse cycle to get rid of any residual detergent. This is because I am told that detergents destroy the waterproofing and breathability capability of the Goretex. While the gear is still in the washing machine I run it through again with some TX Direct and then hang it up somewhere to drip dry. I have been told that a quick spin in the tumble dryer on low heat helps but I don't have one so it has to manage without.

Just use pure soap or non-biological washing powder. And don't use fabric softner as it stops the textile 'breathability' from working.

If you're feeling flush, buy the Nikwax or Grangers textile washing stuff. Your jacket's worth it.

i wash all my textile stuff, except tthe gloves, with the nickwax tech wash
bought a textile care kit from hein gericke last year and its lasted well

you get a wash to get all the dirt off and then a waterproofer to rewash everything in

used in all my rukka goretex liners and the outers and no issues, all the water just runs off and no more wet patches on pants!

well worth it as it makes the jackets last longer and when your spending lots of money on bike kit, you want it to last as long as possible and be as waterproof as possible

As above. Goretex Streetguard suit. Generally washed once or twice per year which generally means ever 6 - 8k of riding. Armour out. Cool wash cycles; 1st Nikwax Techwash and then 2nd wash with Nikwax re-waterproofer.

I have one of the M&S washable suits which came with a large net wash bag. I generally pop the Streetguard suit into this so it is not in direct contact with the washing machine.

Hein Gericke cruise gear about 4yrs old,its been washed loads of times with the nikwax stuff and to this day has never leaked:cool::cool::cool:

jtfr the gortex liners are fixed in the older HG gear

about every 2 years i stick my textiles (hein gerick voyager) into a big plastic vat with nik wax tech wash (minus armour) give it a good lash up hang it oot to dry then then drown it with the nikwax waterproofing spray. So far it has NEVER leaked a drop:beerjug:
