I have just got a Nav 5... and used a tomtom 400 rider. The windy roads on the TomTom is fantastic, but the Nav 5 is naff.... am I doing something wrong... TomTom finds some great roads and Nav 5 just doesn't....

Please advise...

Plan and send your planned route to any device, they are also stored in the cloud so you can edit on the road with an iPad. Like I said it's being Beta tested at the moment but looks promising.

Any news on how you get the edited route (or any route) from an iPad onto a Garmin device. I can only guess that it's going to be via Bluetooth.... Or wizardry.

Anyway, back on topic...

OP, you ask what you are doing wrong. Unfortunately, besides - I assume - selecting the Windy roads option on your Garmin, you haven't told us what you are doing, so it is very difficult to tell. A fuller explanation of your actions, device settings and the precise problems you have encountered will go a long way.

My applogogies. Original post deleted in error. Gist is there though.

Your Garmin will require a certain amount of input from you to get the best out of it. You'll need to get to grips with Basecamp and plan your routes using a decent map.

Too much of a faff? Then flog your NavV and fit the TomTom which is a much more intuitive device with winding roads built in to it

Bottom line. Just want an A to B =TomTom. Want control over where you go =Garmin

Stop Press. That said the lines are being blurred by a new platform being developed by the makers of Tyre called MyRoute. Works on PC and Mac, uses google maps (inc satellite and street view). That's good if you're planning a route on your computer, but if you're out and about and enter a new destination with curvy roads, the OP is correct, the Garmin isn't as good.

Wizardry by the looks of it!! Having played about with it this morning the bottom line is you can't transfer routes to a standalone device without a USB connection:blast But all is not lost!! You can certainly edit routes you've planned on your computer prior to leaving home using an iPad. You can then see these edited routes via an app on a smartphone. The app can then transfer your route to a navigation app. It appears to be quite seamless, the downside is it won't work on the TomTom app. I've downloaded Sygic and it works well with that (Sygic uses TomTom maps anyway) so not perfect but I can mount my phone on my bike and often use it with TomTom if I'm just going from A-B... If you're like me you'll plan all your routes from the comfort of home, It's just occasionally useful to change things which I hate doing manually on the Garmin.

I've got used to Basecamp and find it easy enough to use, MyRoute planning software is not as polished(?) but it is produced by men in sheds in Holland and it's not finished yet!! I'm assuming it's like Tyre but this works on a Mac, I quite like it so far, you can send routes to any sat nav via USB as well as obviously using a smartphone/pad. You will need a wifi/data signal to do this as routes are stored in the cloud, easy enough to sort whilst on the road. I'm in the process of planning a tour of Spain this November, I'll report how I get on with it
