Are they trying to rip me off?

OK, non GS but ...

So I take my Citroen Picasso round to the local exhaust/tyre/brake place to get the front pads replaced cos' the MOT man said I should. Anyway, the brake place won't replace the pads without replacing the disks as he says the disks are below the manufacturers wear limit (we're talking less than 1 mm I believe) and he doesn't want to leave himself open to litigation if the brakes fail.

What I thought was going to be a £70 job has suddenly become £215 + vat.

The car's done 45,000 miles (my Saab never had the disks replaced in over 100,000 miles). Should I take it somewhere else who would just replace the pads or maybe just replace the pads myself? I thought there had be very serious wear on disks before they start to lose their efficiency so am I taking a big risk in not having the disks replaced?

Cheers

£70 for pads! and how much for discs! Thank feck my dads a mechanic. I just had pads and discs fitted to my front wheels for the grand total of £26 including VAT! on a Rover 220SD

Yes, they are ripping you off. I don't know about the litigation b#ll#cks but his prices are unbelievable. I'm sure the discs will be fine and I recommend you just replace the pads yourself. It's just as easy as changing the GS pads once you've got the wheels off. Just keep an eye on the discs but it becomes pretty obvious when they're on their last legs.

Ask the citroen People

What the minimum thickness of the discs should be, take a micrometer or a pair of calipers and measure the discs and check for deep scoring. If they are ok either fit your own pads or why not just take it to the citroen dealer and get a quote?

The Citroen dealer had already quoted over £100 for the pads alone....

1mm does sound thin for brake discs.:D

Next time you go to the dealer just use the back of one of his cars to stop yours. Get out and say it's cheaper to do that than use the brakes!

:)

Thanks guys. I will be holding you responsible when my brakes fail because of shagged disks :D

I've got a shop just round the corner that does brake parts so I'll check them out first.

I had the discs and pads changed on all four wheels of my SAAB 9000 for £186 incl VAT.

All Ferodo parts as well.

I had to get the discs replaced because of corrosion rathe thanwear. The car doesn't get used much and there was one front and one rear disc with pitting.

Anyway, I found that my local Saab specialist (not main dealer) was FAR cheaper than the national brake/exhaust/clutch chains.

There must be a fairly local Citroen specialist in your area. Or as others sugegst, if you're just replacing pads, then it's as easy as pie. 10 mins tops per wheel incl getting the wheel on and off.

I paid £22 for a pair of vented discs for a 98 Espace from Euro car parts.:)

Just picked up the car from the garage (I haven't had the work done btw) and the mechanic reckoned there was just over 2mm wear on the disks and the limit was supposed to be 2mm.

2mm in 45,000 miles? Is that a lot? How long before the disks are likely to fracture? Are they likely to fracture? So is it dangerous?

Cheers
