MRA Vario Screen

6'3", standard GS1150. I tried the standard screen with Tobinators and didn't rate it, still being buffeted and limited to a comfortable 80mph. Moved to the MRA without Tobinators:thumb.
Smooths the airflow, looks good and allows comfortable cruising at 100mph

I did a couple of hundred miles this week mainly motorway and remembered just how bad the bufferting is after a winter lay off.
I am 5'10 Adv, std seat, if i adopted a slightly crouched riding position it was much better but very uncomfortable, so i had to do something.
Torbinators are out of the question at the moment as i am not working, so is a new screen, so i took the screen off the bike, with the aid of some cushions placed it on my work bench, held it down with a couple of bungies, and with a vernier scored a line 13 mm up from from the bottom edge of the screen.
I cut this strip off with a jigsaw and clean up the edge with sand paper, the idea being that a bit more air flow under the screen may move the bufferting.
I am pleased to report that i can now sit up straight and ride without the bufferting, it still has the wind noise with 'dirty air' from the screen but i guess thats always going to happen ? ie if i stand up at 80 wind noise goes away but then get full force of the air on the body.
Until my finances improve it will have to stay that way, or until i gav get a ride on an ADV with torbinators

I've fitted a Vario to my GSA today but found it didn't fit as well as i had expected. I bought it from Jaws and asume it fitted straight on to the original fittings. I took my Tobinators off as It seemed to sit too high with them on but after looking through this thread there seems to be a fitment kit that should be available for a GSA. Anyone know if this is correct. Currently the screen is just held inplace with the original GSA screen fixings and will probably come loose after a while. I noticed someone stated they bought some screen bungs from Motorworks but I can't seem to find them on their site..:nenau

You need the standard 1150GS screen fittings if you haven't got them already.

They replace the Adv screen brackets that you would have taken off to fit your tobinators.

Your Adv screen (parts 4,5 & 6) ;

From the standard 1150GS screen you need parts 2 & 4 ;

& parts 2, 3 4 & 5 (for both sides);

I got one of these recently. It's a good product. John / Jaws did a sterling job getting it out to me, too.

One thing, though. The lower screen (the one that attached to the 'bike)
is a tad thinner than the OE screen.
This means that the black clamps (parts 2 and 3 in above drawing)
cannot secure the screen tightly enough. They 'meet' before they can clamp. The screen will always be loose.
Hold parts 2 & 3 together minus the screen and you see what the problem is.
I ended up sanding the 4 studs and 1/2 inch round area on inner black clamp till they met the screen, ie, as per OE screen.
The Vario still wobbles a bit, but I've stopped it rattling..

Don't let this put you off, again, it's a v. good screen.

Mine's not :nenau

Bit late now, but a bit of rubber (inner tube) between both clamps & the screen might help for anyone else with the probem..............

Ah, good call. I'm thinking of buying one of these screens but how much taller than the O.E. screen is it? I need to know this as I have a Bike Barn and height is a concern. Google Bike Barn if you have never seen one, great if you don't have a garage. Also, I've not seen a really good photo of this screen fitted. I have an 03 black bick so I guess it could look very nice? As per picture!

Mine's not either. Bought secondhand off EBAY five years ago.

I vary the height on the upper part depending on helmet, higher with Caberg flip, lower with full face, and may tilt the lower more upright to move the top further away.

I have to say when I'd used mine and it began to rattle (no danger of coming loose / flying off, just rattling..), I did wonder why no-one else had noticed / mentioned this issue.
A non-problem, then. Good.

I noticed a small gap at5 the front where the clamps cannot meet the screen.
A shim to pack it would indeed have been handy and quicker.
I modded the clamps to fit.
And now mine is clamped as per OE screen.

When I first bought the 1150GS I had the standard screen which I then fitted with Tobinators. This cut down the buffeting considerably.
Later, having spare cash, I decided to try the MRA Vario without Tobinators which was almost as good as the standard + Tobins. This is the way the bike has been for more than two years. The reason I didn't use the Tobinators on the MRA screen is that it is a little on the flimsy side and would tend to flex from side to side given the extra height with them.
A couple of weeks ago, post birthday, I decided to treat myself to a standard GSA screen + Tobinators. This is the best turbulence-free ride I have had to date. The Tobinators stop the helmet height turbulence and the extra width of the GSA screen takes away some of the chest-level blast.
For what its worth I am 5' 7" and have a Sargeant seat on its low setting.

I felt like I was the odd one out until I read this as my experience has been the same. I bought an MRA Vario from Jaws (indeed a most excellent dude :clap:bow:clap) but when it turned up I was surprised at how narrow and flexible it is. I fitted it and rode it over the Severn Bridge to compare it with the standard screen but wasnt that impressed as it is very narrow at the top. :tears . I am 6'3".

So, I opted to remain with the standard GSA screen but my problem was that my original standard GSA screen was a bit too flexible. I ordered Tobinators and on a whim also ordered a tinted standard GSA screen from Nippy's. Interestingly the tinted screen from Nippy's seems to be made of thicker plastic than the clear original screen I had which sorted out the flexing problem. Combined with the Tobinators it'ss awesome and looks pretty cool too with the tint (but not enough that you cant see through it). :D:D:D:thumb:thumb2:bounce1:roll:guitarist:hug:JB

MRA screen will be sold on here soon!

Whilst on the subject of "things I have tried", I normally ride with a Y-piece and standard pipe which I have always been happy with, but in my "sheepish Tosser" way I tried the stubby pipe with the standard cat. I found this gave me too much deep noisy resonance, which I found very tiring over a long journey, as the exhaust exits nearer to the centre of the bike. I can see that someone wishing to fit a larger lefthand pannier closer to the centre line of the bike might put up with the noise, especially as it would probably be better shielded by the pannier, but for me with standard panniers I prefer the normal exhaust.
Hope this might give some people a little pause for thought.

Without hijacking this thread (:topic - please dont shoot me down) just briefly I have opted for a stubby as I have two full size panniers I had made up by a chap on this forum. Another possible option if you want to use full size panniers both sides would be to get a custom exhaust made to exit under the rear seat. Think this would be too much work though as would involve modifying the back end. Cat and stubby for me. As per the risk of hijacking this thread if anyone is interested do a search on 'stubby' and/or drop me an email had loads of excellent advise from other tossers on this. :thumb

p.s. Rode the bike to Portugal via France in December and back to the UK last weekend with this combination and ride was superb. Round trip of about 3000 miles through sleet, snow, rain, hail, and sunshine and no problems at all.

Maybe the MRA just aint suited to me. Tinted GSA screen from Nippy's was about £60 I think. Tobinators are raaatherrr pricey  No pain, no gain:cool

Floppy MRA screen??

I have an 1150GS with standard screen and tobinators. The tobs made a massive difference with much less turbulence and I have been running with them for 3yrs now. But. But, I yearn after a little less turbulence at 80+ and have been thinking about the MRA vario screen with great recommendations from everyone. But I'm a little concerned that it's much thinner than the std screen and with flop about:D - my std screen is rock solid. What's your experience if you've moved to the MRA??

Hello Mr Mole,

I was not the first to mention the MRA screen moving about more than the standard one. This was not intended to ctiticise the product.
It's just a characteristic.
It's TUV approved, well made and it can take it.

The vario smoothes the air flow out and is (imho) worth the $$.

The clamping issue I raised was an issue for me, but it only took 1/2 an hour or so to remedy.

All the best,

B.

its a 30 second job to lower the upper screen chap - if you decide to ride with it fully extended and can't get it into your bike barn.. it won't be a problem.

Good Kit, Good Service.

Just fitted a MRA Vario to my 02' 1150 as supplied by Jaws and spent the afternoon trying all of the variations of angle and height. Huge improvement over the standard screen and great fast service from Jaws :thumb2
I had to cut an old inner tube to make a gasket to pack a small gap on the mounting brackets which makes a good fit better.
Frontbrake .

Vario Convert

Been reading with interest the debate on screens for the GS1150. I'm 6 foot 4 so I need something better than the standard. I'm leaning towards the Vario. I've seen a link on here in the past where they were under 100 quid. I've also seen them for around the 115 mark. Does anyone recommend a place to get one?
Cheers

Finally got my MRA vario for my 1150GS - it's even better than my original with tobinators and very well made too. I found that it was best tilted right back.
