I was in Scotland last weekend and arrived at Applecross on friday evening to discover I had a collapsed rear wheel bearing on my 990. Only thing for it was a walk to the Applecross Inn and a few beers while I hatched a plan. I found a bearing factor in Inverness on and my pal said he'd run me over in the morning on his new 1190 to get the bearings, we had a few more beers and retired to our tents me planning to get up early to knock the bearings out.

Morning came and amazingly I was up early, I got one of the bearings out but couldn't budge the other so I needed to get the wheel to a garage for some assistance at which point my pal said "stick the wheel on the back of my bike and I'll wait here", very generous I might add. So I duly loaded the wheel headed over the pass to Loch Carron and the garage, explained my predicament to the garage proprietor who said he'd get the bearing out while I nipped over to Inverness after a call to the factor to see if they were open and had a couple of bearings in stock, they were and they had stock so off I headed.

The road to Inverness from Applecross is a 160 mile round trip and ranges from a single track pass to dual carriageway with everything in between and was a perfect ride to get a real feel for the bike. I'd test ridden an 1190 last year and was impressed but this ride simply blew me away, the bike was amazing in every respect quite simply the best bike I think I've ever ridden. Power in abundance, amazing brakes, great handling, good wind protection and comfortable. I got back to Loch Carron picked up my wheel from the garage sans bearing and headed back over the pass to Applecross. I arrived to questions about wheel bearings, bearing factors etc but just couldn't stop raving about the bike eventually I put Blondie, my pal and his wife out of their misery and said "yes, i got the bearings". I fitted the bearings and new seal put the wheel back in the 990 and all was well.

The weekend went on and I couldn't stop thinking how good the 1190 was, we rode down to Glen Coe and spent a night at the Red Squirrel campsite and again I was raving about the 1190. We rode home on monday and I was back at work on Tuesday, I did really well, I made it to just after 9am :) before I was on the phone to Colwyn Bay Motorcycles so see what my 990 was worth against a new 1190, negotiations continued throughout the week until the order for my new 1190 was placed today :D I collect it next Saturday and I am rather excited.

Next weekend will be running in with the first service booked for the tuesday, would have been the Monday but for the bank holiday.

So there you go 990 to 1190 via a wheel bearing and the generosity of a great friend. Thank you Youngy!

Aidan when I next see you I'll tell you about breaking down in the Alps on a gravel pass with a burst high pressure fuel pipe - you won't believe how lucky I was!

Funny how you never have "issues" near to home Dave. ;) Best of luck with the new bike. :thumb2

That's because I ride the buggers :)

Trust you're both well :thumb

Right that's it , no more allowed on here they are getting too popular, I like being different.
Seriously, you're gonna love it!

I went from the 990 tp the 1190. Likewise. I have had quite a few bikes, and the 1190r is the best bike i have ever had.

It's definitely the best bike I have ever owned, but we need to keep quiet about it otherwise there's going to be a plethora of LC's for sale and every time we pull up at our destination we are going to see a sea of orange!

:thumb I've stopped posting on forums about how great the bike is and just stick to tech and accessory talk. It's a bit like broadcasting your favourite road and then seeing the flood gates open.
The old 11** GS's aren't actually better than the newer 1200's despite what the old guard profess, it's just that they make you feel a bit more distinct from the new herd.

The saving grace is that KTM did not fit shaft drive (or comfy pillion seat on the R) so I recon we may be safe from the people who want the sensible choice :beerjug: :yelrotflm

Did you buy any tasteful extras with the it :)

have fun with the bike , hopefully getting mine back this week so I can fit these , off to Moto GP in spain next month

Saturday was the day to chop in the 990 and collect my 1190 but things were more problematic than I hoped for. I was up early and sauntered over to my workshop and wheeled the 990 out for our last ride together, fired it up and stalled it tried again and the same thing happened but I noticed that the rev counter did a sweep after it stalled leading me to believe that I had an electrical problem. I'd left myself plenty of tome to get to Colwyn Bay as I'd asked my insurers to swap from the 990 to the 1190 and I wanted to be sure of being there before I had insurance issued - no such luck. As I'd removed all my electrical accessories I thought I must have caught something and loosened a block connector so it was headlamp mask off jiggle wires, jiggle more wires until I eventually found the problem. The pair of wires from the ignition switch to the main loom had been compressed in the headstock region, the wires had broken and were just held together with the insulation, I couldn't believe this was happening on the very day I was chopping the bike in! Needless to say the bike was in plenty of bits with both tanks off.

So I've now discovered what the issue is and thankfully it was nothing to do with my removal of the electrical accessories :) I now thought all will be well after a quick call to my insurance broker, Swinton, to have the changeover time moved but that didn't work... I called them and they told me "Aviva is closed now until Tuesday and we can make the changes for you then", I didn't argue there was little point, she just didn't understand that what this meant was I couldn't ride the 990 to Colwyn Bay, it was 9:20 am, 10 minutes to changeover time and Colwyn Bay is a good hour away.... I asked if they could insure me for a day but to no avail. I am now seriously pissed off and call Colwyn Bay Motorcycles who simply said "no worries we'll pick you and the bike and you can ride the new bike home" sorted :) Soldering iron out, wires replaced, bike reassembled and tested down my drive which is 1/2 mile long and handy when your insurance has just expired for testing your bike. Steve arrives we load the bike in the van and have a real good chat on the way to pick the 1190 up - Steve, thank you.

I get to Colwyn bay Motorcycles, my bike is ready and waiting for me with all the bits and bobs I'd ordered fitted and ready to ride away, a bit of paperwork and I'm on it with a big smile. The original plan had been to collect the bike at 9, ride away at 9:30, spend the afternoon fitting my electrics (power for heated vests, Autocom & GPS via a separate fuse box) the Blondie and I were going to have a bit of a ride and get a fish and chip supper. As I'd lost a load of time the late afternoon and evening was spent sorting my electrical bits out and the ride to the chippy went out of the window. All was done at around 10:30 pm so it was off to bed with a view to getting some miles done today (saturday), the bike is booked for it's first service on Tuesday so I need to get on with it!

Up we got and headed off at 9am wending our way to Welshpool where we stopped for some breakfast and decided, over breakfast, that we'd go to Tenby and back which we did so the bike now has 500 miles on it and we're heading for The Dales tomorrow to get another couple of hundred done. Then back to Colwyn Bay on tuesday.

What can I say about the bike, well it's just the same as Youngy's to ride and if you started at the beginning you know what I thought of that needless to say all has worked out well and I'm pleased as punch. I already had a few things planned so it will amass a couple of thousand miles in the next week or two and I honestly can't wait.

Wow, close call and really not how you wanted things to go, but all good at the end. No need to say 'enjoy' as you already are ! So, HTR......:beerjug:

so............. have got an SMT currently (after selling my GSA) - struggling with it and miss the overall practicality of the GSA (never took panniers off!!) and now I have just seen an advert for a new 2013 model with EDS and TPMS BUT of course without the new gen ABS. The price however is 1500€ cheaper than the 2014 model with that on it - that buys a lot of extras!!! Anybody ridden both who can share their experiences? Cheers!

If you're talking about an 1190 adv then the upgrade to 2014 ABS is around £350 so you can't really go wrong.
