I have a few minutes to spare so I might as well make a start...........

Bilco had organised a pre-trip meeting in late March and Skybod had been kind enough to host it at the HQ of his worldwide business empire, in Manchester.
We arrived to find a decent turnout of people & bikes.

It was an excellent get together, Chris' attention to detail was 1st class & he balanced his clear enthusiasm for motorcycling in North America with potential pitfalls & things to be wary of. We were also warned about the amount of paperwork that would be involved  and given rough costs for the trip.

Additionally we met most of our fellow tripees (?) for the 1st time.

A combination of Chris's selling of the trip & the terrific people we meet left poor old Sarah in a right quandry for many weeks. She doesn't like bikes, she has no interest in bikes & less interest in going on a bike holiday. She doesn't like mountains, has never wanted to go to Canada & doesn't do less than 4* hotels. But despite all of this she couldn't get away from the thought that she was going to be really missing out if she didn't come on this one.

Having done very few miles on my GSA & being slightly concerned about it's height I was also able to try Bilco's low Sargeant seat. Decision made, I needed one of those.

Arkela's bike

Most of us were staying at a nearby Premier Inn so after the meeting we headed off there for a few beers* & some snap.

Like the dickhead I am I didn't take any photos of the food or the other tripees but I know others did so I'm hoping they might add them on here.

*Thanx to Gary for buying a round for roughly 20 people, I'm not sure anyone else realised you'd done so. :thumb2

Costs so far
Return flights - £1,200
Bike shipping - £1,950
Accomodation up front - £330
New tyres - £215
Pre trip service £100-ish (I hope)
Garmin maps - £70
Bike insurance for USA & breakdown recovery insurance - £350
Container insurance - £210 (1.5% of the value of the bike)
Heathrow hotel & 3 weeks parking - £170.
Tie down straps - £35 (ish).

Just to clarify these costs, they are very personal, I have gone for the best insurances possible, upgraded my flights & not skimped on the Heathrow hotel.
This is going to be a one off trip for me & I am determined to make it as memorable & worry free (ha!) as possible.

When filling in the USA bike insurance paperwork I did get a nasty surprise. One of the questions relates to outstanding finance on the bike.
A quick call to BMW Finance confirmed how much was owing but also threw a rather large spanner in the works.
It transpires that if you have your bike on a PCP you are "not allowed to take it out of Europe sir"., in fact :eek::eek:
I had a chat with one of their legal guys & he confirmed the same. "No sir. Not anywhere out of Europe".
Obviously my next questions were how would they know & what would they do if I did take it to America.
To cut a long story short there is potential for the finance company finding out & they have the right to ask customs to impound the bike, claim it back & I would forfeit her.:bomb
Oh. :bomb:bomb
What to do? :nenau
I'd already forked out a substantial sum in flights etc & didn't want to miss the trip but equally couldn't take the risk of losing the bike (no matter how unlikely in reality).
Oh the joys of having OCD.:augie

Well a few quick phone calls later, a transfer of funds & my dear 76 year old mother is now effectively the temporary owner of a 1200 cc motorbike. :moped:

does this mean you are going to be official trip reporter then? :D:thumby:

bit of a bugger about the finance thing:eek:

i have a few pictures but off my phone in the pub and are poor quality.

looking forward to your trip reports henceforth :thumb2

I really wish I hadn't seen this thread as it's opened a can of worms for me:blast

My bike is on PCP as well, having now read all the small print the blurb says you are not to take the bike out of the UK, although you can take it to Europe for up to 60 days a year with a maximum of 30 days at a time. (I've already breached this one!!)

Would they know? I doubt it, unless of course I crash, breakdown and require BMW warranty work or the container goes AWOL in transit. Maybe I could plead ignorance, but this is not normally a good defence in law "What do you mean, you didn't read ALL of the small print" So...worth the risk?.... If push comes to shove, yes, I'm going no matter what but obviously I'd rather not have this hanging over my head so I'm going to look at other options...a cautionary tale for anyone else planning to take a bike on PCP to the US (or Africa).

7 grand anyone:D

What about a carnet de passage? Not required for the USA I think but it gives the lender a guarantee. Obviously you pay for that but it may be worth giving your finance company a call to see if they will accept it.

I'm really sorry.
It never crossed my mind until I spoke to BMW Finance.

Chris has done this sort of trip many times and has never had a problem I'm sure.
I'm equally certain that you & I aren't the only 2 people to have their bikes on PCP in all the years he's been exporting and re-importing bikes to/from North America.
I can't imagine it will be a problem but my OCD just wouldn't let me go on the trip with that hanging over my head.

Apologies again.

(If you want know exactly what BMW said feel free to drop me a PM)

OK, as this is the thread where everyone will be posting on the trip as a "as it happens" ride report, I'll get it rolling. The bikes arrived bang on time with the brilliant people at Santa Rosa BMW/Triumph in Santa Rosa, California. This dealership has to one of the most generous with their time I've ever come across and just love having us turn up with loads of bikes ready for a big trip. Can't see that happening in too many in the UK that's for sure! The workshop is clean and tidy and they have a couple of great mechanics who are happy to help out with any issues. The dealership refuses point blank to take any money for this so it will be off to get plenty of beer for the guys as payment which always goes down well. If any of you are ever in this part of the world, I can thoroughly recommend you calling in for a brew.

I got the bikes and equipment unloaded on my DIY loading ramps in a couple of hours so they can get a bit of fresh California air after a few weeks cooped up in the container. Got them all started so they are ready for everyone to pick up on Saturday when they get here. The trip actually starts on Monday so we'll get a bit of local riding in the get everyone up to speed at the weekend.

A very big cold beer now for me as frankly, I bloody well deserve it:beer:

I've got one of Chris's trips firmly on my bucket list.....just need to save the dough now :D

Have an awesome trip chaps......:thumb2

Whilst we are this close, it would be rude not to go to the Golden Gate Bridge. The weather was excellent and it's a rare thing to see the bridge without it's normal cloak of fog!! Great days riding back up highway 1.

Will live my dreams through your exploits so keep posting guys and most of all Enjoy what I am sure will be a trip of a lifetime.:thumby:

Awaiting all the instalments.:popcorn

Eureka California is the coldest place in the state and they aren't joking. 32 degrees inland and 12 on the coast. However the architectures nice and some great murals on the buildings. The lost coast brewery is pretty nice too.....!!

Had a cracking ride up from Vancouver to Clinton British Columbia. The weather was beautiful with the summer heat just gone, staggering scenery wherever you look so the riding was just about perfect. The sun shines on the righteous and all that.....:thumb2
