Without any warning...... the near side front and rear indicators have just stopped working on my 2005 RT. The off side is working fine. When the o/ side lights are flashing, pressing the n/s switch doesn't cancel the o/s and activate the n/s. Its as if the n/s switch has packed up.
Can anyone suggest what could be done before I start stripping down the plastic etc.
Many thanks, Roy.

You must appreciate that the failure of the 'control' unit on the left hand handlebar is a standard feature on the RT (and GS), a feature included in the purchase price.
My last RT had THREE replaced under warranty in 2.5 years. My current RT is already on it's SECOND unit also replaced under warranty at 13 months old and 12K miles. My last GS also has THREE units!
That's life!

Many thanks for all your information fella's, I suppose the control unit as lasted 9 years, that must be some sort of record so need to inform BMW, only joking. On a serious note how the hell do you remove the control unit/switch, I've just spent 30mins in the garage taking all visible screws out and it still wont budge???? And as and when it comes off can it be serviced or is it a new one?
No warranty on the RT so anyone got a unit for sale going cheap?

It may well be just the microswitch that has failed. Recent thread on here somewhere re how to fix (I think in the GS section). Popell has ordered some in from the states which he'll sell if you contact him.

Thanks.............Will get bike tested to see if its the microswitch when it goes into BMW dealer for a recall check on fuel pump flange. If its the microswitch I will have a go to renew, I mean how hard can it be! Will ask Popell or maybe Motorworks to provide. So will update has things progress.

Dealer said they can't test to see if the switch is the problem! Motorworks can only provide a complete assembly or a used micro switch....... Anyway I ordered ten micro switches from DigiKey, will keep two so eight switches are for sale on ebay if anyone interested. They are listed as........indicator micro switch 401-1159-ND.
So next is to find my soldering iron and have a go.

An update.........control unit carefully disassembled with about 6 assorted screws. On inspection the rubber boot that once kept water at bay had split and perished letting moisture inside the micro switch. Filler material removed from inside switch with small screwdriver, de-solder the two wires from terminals, solder wires onto new micro switch, fill around wire terminals with silicone mastic and reassemble control unit. All now working and such a simple job taking a few hours.
