Is it usual to replace the junction box as a matter of course - or it there a good chance it can be cleaned and re-used?

BTW Upper cable and upgrade kit ~£67. Crikey!

No need to change as a matter of routine unless there are obvious defects. Whilst taking it apart to replace the cables you can clean it up and a little silicon lubricant should have it as good as new. Don’t go mad with the lube or it can attract dust & grit.

Update:
Such an improvement! Including the throttle balance and smooth pick-up.
I needed to re-adjust my heavy right hand afterwards.

I think I could have retained the upper cable. The problem was mainly the lower cables and probably a very dusty junc box.
I was expecting some faffing to get the junc. box out but that was no problem.
