To end the hijack of Tetley’s excellent G/S makeover.

Today I tested a ST stand on my 81 G/S.

The bike moved easily on to the stand but both wheels remain on the ground :blast

Discovered my G/S stand is in a very poor condition :yikes

That's going to fall over on anything that isn't perfectly flat?

Why did you go for this rather than a g/s one?

Hi Tufty, The pictures clearly need clarification.

The bike is resting on the ST stand showing both wheels are on the floor.

The damaged (rotting) stand is my (Arkwright’s) original G/S stand and it has proven to be a pig to use since I bought it.

It was suggested to me that an ST stand may resolve my problem and seeing one on eBay last week I bought it to test it out.

The ST stand rolled on easily and worked as a stand but too short if you need to lift a wheel off the ground without putting some wood under it.

The damaged G/S stand always felt it was wobbling about and unsafe, now I know why.

When I converted my ST into a G/S using a 21” front wheel and a G/S rear shock ( albeit with ST forks which I think are the same length) I added 30mm to the ST stand. The wear that that you’ve photographed I sleeved and re welded the damage.

Thanks Paul,

Since ordering the ST stand I made an impulse purchase of some paralever forks and I suspect the they would not work together.

I will see if the G/S stand is repairable before looking for a new one.

See if yer can get a pair of 3/4 NB spring bends from off a pipefitter - then get Mistacat ( chris ) to weld um up

HTHY

Thanks Mick.

I think Chris will be getting fed up of me :D

You will remember this bike being a challenge to lift on to its stand at a Buffalo farm breakfast last year and Arkwright coming over to show us we were wimps for not knowing his (simple ) technique.

Went through a couple of stands like that! I ended up welding some 10mm x 3mm flat on the bottom legs as a 'sacrificial' plate that I'll replace when it starts to get to thin.

Another option is the same vein would be some 3mm checker plate to form a slight "foot" and a sacrificial wear point. That would probably work on both GS and St stand. Just don't have a nice polish wooden floor in your garage.

Thanks to Mistacat for repairing and strengthening with 3mm flat bar rails, the G/S and ST stands.

ST stand needs shorter springs but is a very easy lift.

G/S stand now stable in use. :thumby:

Need to paint them now :)

Just interested in this thread re my 86 g/s pd. Being bit vertically challenged i have lovered the rear shock by 30 mm and now find it very difficult to put it on the centre stand. My question - is the st stand shorter and by how much , assuming it fits my g/s frame.

Byron, I have an ST stand you can borrow to measure up. It's needing repair so I wouldn't fit it. And long time no see!

Hi Byron,

Difficult to measure accurately because of the bend but ST is about 1” shorter at the bend sitting the thickness of the pipe lower.

However, the bike rolls on to the ST stand with very little effort or lifting but I now need to find shorter springs before I can use it.

I am fitting GS forks soon and if that lifts the front it may no longer be of use to me!
