somewhere, over the rainbow...
Hello folks. Ive just dug my 93 r100gs out from a years slumber and found it to be overcharching the battery. (Voltage just keeps on risinging with the revs). I’ve tried several v. regulators with no change, so i did the checks in the Haynes manual and it seems like the diode board is at fault. I have a high output alternator with an Emerald Isle diode board that looks pretty crusty. (Im guessing corrosion has caused the failure as it was fine when last used over a year ago) My question is: if i use the original bmw diode board untill i get a replacement, will it get fried by the high output alternator??
Cheers as always,

Karl.

How are you checking the overcharging ?

Is it with a known good Multimeter or with an on board voltmeter?

If its the bikes own Disregard and go and buy a new cheapo multimeter

Fit to the bike and check volts before engine running and again when running

You want app 12.5 volts + or - 0.5 before ignition on

then it will drop a little and hopefully when the engine is running you will see 13 to 14.5 (ish)

Its only a big worry if you are seeing 15 plus volts and turning the lights and heated grips on should suck that out for you in the interim

Hopefully that is useful

If it were me, I'd take the crusty diode board and clean it up so no possibility of something shorting or bypassing a diode.
