Hi, I have read on here several times about sudden battery failure and I especially felt for the guy who got stranded in Holland. So I went out and bought a NOCO Boost as they have been mentioned on here.
When reading the NOCO manual it states that they are only suitable for lead acid batteries!
I understand that my 2022 1250 battery is a GEL type (AGM?). I'm interested to know of your thoughts about using one of these in an emergency with this type of battery. Has anyone been in this situation? Thank you. John

Of course you can. An Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery is simply a lead acid battery with its electrolyte suspended in a fiberglass mat wrapped tightly around the positive plate. The plates are compressed together to enhance the chemical reaction but still it is a lead acid battery. Nothing magical or different in it operation or life. AGM technology has replaced ‘gel’ or stabilized electrolyte in VRLA batteries.

This was an answer online by a battery specialist.

Yep, used my nico 40 helping mate with gel battery no problem.

I must get around to buying one (Owning a 1250 with a tracker its probably essential).

I'll get a GB40 (1000A) so it has the capacity to start my 2 litre VW diesel van if needed.

Would also be handy on tour as a power bank for the iPhone and a bright torch, plus it can be charged up in the tank bag via cockpit USB whilst riding.

A neighbour used his Halfords own brand jump-starter on my sons VW Polo last year rather than me fetching my jump leads. I was skeptical but the dead car burst into life at the first flick of the starter. These things are amazing for their tiny size.

Many thanks for your replies guys, especially the info from Davey B. Its nice to know I haven't bought a 'white elephant'! I just hope I don't have to use it!

Thats the one i have, for the same reason.
I keep it with me either on bike or in car, its handy for anyone you come across too.
could be someone's hero turning up with this.

the GB40 will start up to 6ltrs apparently, my cars a 2.8 so think i'm safe :)
I usually carry a separate power bank and keep the NOCO for emergencies

If you want to look at one in the flesh i can show you mine (ooer misses) if your at the Portsoy event :D

The going rate for the GB40 is about £109.95 RRP at most places. I don't fancy buying a used item on ebay etc (no knowing if it has been abused and no warranty exists) for not much of a saving.

I am awaiting getting a Halfords Trade Card so I can see what discounted price they can offer.

£87.96 with trade card for the gb40

If your car/bike battery is really drained you have very little chance of starting using one of these.

When the battery voltage drops below a certain level typically below 11.5v the ECU prevents the bike/car from starting. This device bridges the gap to 12.8v to tell the ECU to draw from the existing battery. The jump pack will provide some current (amps) for a second or so. The amount depending on the size of the GB unit.

Either way it is always on option. I purchased some motorbike jump leads from ebay for under a tenner which are meaty enough and is the same size packed as the GB40 stuff

Worth looking at the GBX45 too. A touch more pricey, but has their new lithium battery, a bit more grunt for starting engines & a bigger battery (31WH battery vs 24WH in the GB40) - and probably some other features i missed

Watching videos online, I was under the impression that the unit has a manual bypass mode that ignores inbuilt safety features and allows starting a vehicle with less that 2 volts present, to be used with caution obviously.

I've had a anti-gravity micro start for a few years and started several cars and a truck , but never my own vehicles :nenau
Still going strong, would have another.

Bought a GB40 from Halfords and fully charged it at home. Went to use it the following day and the GB40 was flat. Returned it for a refund but not enough confidence to buy another.

I just finally got myself a Halfords Trade Card and paid £87.46 inc vat for a NOCO GB40. Not what I call cheap but better than the £109.95 RRP they sell for. (I’m no fan of the company but a saving is a saving.)

It might come in handy, better than being stuck at the roadside or at a Hotel unable to depart for a ferry anyway.

Same for me, too many failures with this brand for me

Just to even things out a bit, I've had one for a few years and used it many times without any issues whatsoever. During lockdown and my partner's car not being used a lot, her battery drained frequently. One flick with the NOCO and bish, bash, bosh, she was up and running again. It's definitely paid for itself with the convenience of just clipping it on and starting up and not worrying about someone having to 'jump' me.

I went for the Anti-gravity brand about 2 months ago and so far it has been faultless.
It’s not been used to start a bike yet, but is very useful for charging phones, intercom etc. when you are camping.

My new NOCO GB40 has a years warranty so I will keep an eye on its charge state and return it for a refund if it turns out to be faulty.

Had no problems with my Noco.
Even after being in top box and car boot for 12 month without charging, it had 50% in it which started my mates car.

amazing piece of kit, i didn't realise so many people had issues with them?
