I'm taking her indoors to Germany at the end of April. (Car not bike.) I'll be heading back to Ijmuiden along the Rhine and have sorted a route up to a little bit further than Wiesbaden. The possibility of a couple of nights in Aachen appeals (the Cathedral mainly) but if anyone has any thoughts about other interesting places to stay further north on the Rhine, I'd be grateful for suggestions.

For cathedrals, Cologne

True, it's impressive when you think the Allies flattened the place (90%) between 1942-45. The view from the south tower (sudturm), if you can cope with some 500 steps, is spectacular - hopefully still open to the public.

On balance though, I think I preferred Dusseldorf - some classy shops & buoyant riverside quarter in the Old Town, or the mediahafen area on the south side. The Radisson Blu maybe. The last time we stayed though, we were attending the Techno-Classica car show at Essen Messe, so we stayed at the Mercure at Ratingen, convenient for the show halls & generally getting around the whole area. BTW the T-C dates for this year are 13-16 April 2023, well worth a visit. There is also the massive Caravan Salon at Dusseldorf Messe late summer, for those interested in such things.

PS: don't forget your TUV Umwelt emissions sticker if not organised already ........... https://www.tuvsud.com/de-de/branch...laketten/bestellung-feinstaubplakette-england

Thanks. I've been to Koln but not to Aachen so I reckon it'll be the latter.

OTOH her nibs did a year as an au pair in Dusseldorf back in the dark ages so she may want to indulge in some nostalgia so will mention that as a possibility. Thanks.

Thanks also for the sticker info. I had no idea!

Cologne would indeed be the obvious choice as a couple of days stop-over, if it’s not to be Aachen.

The trouble is that it all gets very congested in the corridor: Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg / Essen, whilst the alternatives from Wiesbaden to Ijmuiden, require either a swing out to the west or quite a long way out to the east, before curling up or across to Ijmuiden.

I have just had a look at the rough Guide’s guide to UNESCO sites in Germany.

I did a piece or two on the Roman ‘Limes’ fortified structures. See post #48 in this thread:

And see:

The Romans did love a wall or two. The Rhaetian Wall on this site is related, at least spiritually, to Hadrian’s Wall, also built to hold back the uncivilised north.

Thanks Richard. I think a visit to the Limes and back to Trier, is called for but probably on a bike some time

Anecdote: I once used a clip from the start of Gladiator to introduce a lesson on the Roman army. At the end and from the back ...

Mr Pete? See that huge German boy?
Er ... Yeeees? (You just never know what might come next!)
That was ma grandda'!

And he was!
