Towing the bike front wheel up?

So if I’m understanding you, because towing the bike in neutral is like a constant deceleration (possibly for hundreds or thousands of miles), the rear bevel bearing is taking a load that’s opposite to its intended use, which wears it rapidly.

I'd guess he might mean that the bearing is not immersed in oil as shaft not level. Surely a bearing doesnt care which way it's rotating.

However ! I once towed my mates BMW GS 650 to wales and I think it some how dropped into gear and fused the 2nd gear ! cost me 1500 quid to get fixed with full engine rebuild !

so make sure your in neutral and the bike does not jump easily into gear (i.e. check regularly on route)

If you have a towbar, why don't you use a proper bike trailer.
It is so easy to load bikes on, or chuck them in the back of a rental van.

I don't understand why anyone would consider hitching the bike on the front wheel when:

– it will square off your back wheel
– risks messing up final drive
– risks (as it happened) catastrophic damage to the gearbox and engine...
