Picked this up from a fellow inmate on ADVrider. The document contains information of the known fault on the front forks. See attached document. This is issued for the North America market so wonder if it is in effect here as well.

This is issued for the North America market so wonder if it is in effect here as well.

I think it would be pretty difficult for them to deny a claim for a fault which they have acknowledged via a SIB, even if it is for another market.

Have they ever denied the issue? My dealer said no problem when I raised the concern.

From what I've read on here, it would seem that not everyone has been met with equal treatment from dealers when raising the issue. The issue of a SIB, does strengthen the case for any customer finding resistance to a claim, either from the dealer or BMW.

It took me 9000 miles to convince them that my forks is fubar before it was replaced. Even then the dealer would still not commit to fixing the problem if it arises again once out of warranty :(

I am pretty sure another couple of miles and the wear will show again, at least now it will be easier to go and say wait a :forry minute what about this bulliten you send out :eek :D

I must admit the forks were one of the biggest reasons for me getting rid of mine, I just could not face a bill for new forks again, or even extensive work on them in year three, my bike never went off road and for me was just a big 'Motard and in this day and age I do not expect to to swap big lumps of machine every few thousand miles.

To say I was disappointed is an understatement, the HP2 was the most expensive bike I ever purchased and at the time was a 'keeper' now I ride a 450X with stupid 70 hour service requirements that have to be adhered to at the cost of two years warranty.

I somehow doubt I will be riding modern B*W's much longer. :(

Totally agree with you mate the HP2 I have also bough as a keeper and thus far certainly the best bike I have ever owned apart from the front forks. It is not nice riding something with the idea in the back of your head that sooner or later it’s going to cost you a fortune or it will need to be replaced with some haggle and bargaining with a dealer. My warrantee runs out end February so will either be forced to fork (excuse the pun) out the extra cash just in case the front forks go again which I am sure they will. I don’t use my bike offroad either and actually want to do but then running the risk of knackerning the forks faster again.

I have weighed up all the options and it seems that if I want to keep this bike will end up getting different triple clamps and WP 48mm front forks. This will probably mean I need to get a front wheel assembly as well so not entirely the cheapest option going forward. Sadly I love this bike to bits and enjoy every single mile on it so will have to see the extra cost as modifications to hopefully swallow the bitter forking pill easier. At this stage 18k miles later I just can’t see getting rid of this bike ever.

My forks had the internals fixed for around 400 pounds (by the previous owner). The forks lasted 19000 miles of abuse - commuting, two up touring and a lot of playing off-road and in water. I never touched the forks in all that time, which is beyond neglect :blast :( But I've just had them fully rebuilt, including having the legs recoated (in stronger chrome rather than the fancy finish they had), for 400 pounds. Considering the abuse and neglect I've shown them, I think they've done pretty well. If I find a good deal (and have the cash kicking around) I'll pick up some WP48mm forks... but it's quite a big job (new bottom yoke, new fork feet, possible brake system...) so for now I'm sticking with keeping them serviced :thumb

Agree with the big work but taking into consideration the fact that there is already £800 spend on your forks in the lifetime of the bike I am thinking rather putting that towards a proper set of forks going forward and even going as far as to replace the bushes etc in the forks myself until then.....how difficult can it be :augie :D

Thanks about this information. I have this problem with my Megamoto. I already complained twice at spanish bmw service, but they didn't found anything wrong. Now i have something to show at service and the noise is not in my head only. :thumb2

I think the bulletin says the Megamoto already comes with the fix. What's happening with yours?

Mine is registed 11/2007. I had an accident and they changed front front forks to new ones at 1000km. That clonking started while after that and now i have about 13000km on it. When i drive very slow and hit and release front brakes quickly many times in series it clonks every time. Also if i drive to deceleration bumbs, it makes that clonk every time. No matter how slow i drive there.

I saw, that this is about enduro, but i missed that line about Megamoto. :nenau

Anyhow the problem sounds like mine.

WP upgrade

Just spent a rather large wad on fitting KTM works triple clamps & closed cartridge WP 48mm forks with stiffer springs - now the bikes a keeper.
The forks combined with Ohlins rear suspension have truly transformed the bike.
I think BMW want us all to ride their bikes slowly thats why thy give us cheap crap suspension.
Love the rest of the BM bits though.

I don't know how to post pictures I can email them if someone could help me upload them.
