1150 OR 1200 GSA? HELP!

Hi ,am sure this has been asked 1000000000 times but what is best 1150 or 1200gsa. Hope to have about £7000ish so should i get a late 1150 or an early 1200.:confused::Is it true early 1200 had problems?:I am not to worried about age as long as its in good nick and not been to the moon and back.Bike height is not a problem as i am 6 foot 4".Regards Richard(big Dick to close friends):)

Hi gser,

I ride a gsa 1150 adventure 53 plate and it allways puts a smile on my face , one of the guys i have met was finn great guy and has owned both the 1150 & 1200 models i would ask him and by the way he has gone back to a 1150 gsa MMMmmmmm . In my humble opinion the 1150 is great on road and down the lanes but its your preferance at the end of the day . Welocome to the site and you will find the site good for bits and bobs and a great bunch of people .

1150 or 1200???

Hi,Neal.Thanks for that.I am going down to my local BM dealer this week to hopefuly book one or two test rides to try and help me make my mind up.:confused:
 
welcome onboard mate.
i have just got the 1150gs and i totally love it.
its very split here as to what make which the better bike.
like already mentioned by others, ride both and make your choice based on what suits you best.
either way you will love it :thumb

Make sure your test rides are at least a couple of hours each, and make them back-to back if you can, over some mixed roads.

It can take a little while to gel with a GS- little foibles like the indicator system will take your concentration away from the feel of the bike but obce you've ben on the road an hour, it'll all start making sense.

Buying a bike is a real 'Heart' matter for most people, so see if you can work out which option makes you grin the widest and go with that.

if you're likely to go touring two-up, take your pillion out for at least part of each test ride as well- the bikes are very different for pillions as well as riders.

Lastly, don't completely ignore the 1100GS either- for 7 grand you could get a top bike, fit all the farkles you could want (latest GPS, Hard panniers etc) and still have enough money left after paying the insurance to have a bloody good two week tour anywhere you want.....and you wouldn't be getting an inferior bike either- there are some minty clean 1100's out there still :)

As already said, they are two different bikes. I`ve had both and IMHO the 1200 is a much better all round motorcycle. It`s lighter, more powerful and handles better.

Having said that, the 1150 is a great bike and it`s down to personal preference and make sure you have long test rides. For what it`s worth, I`d have no problems having an 1150ADV again if needs must.

For 7k, you may be very lucky and get an early 1200GSA or you will get a very late 1150GSA with all the toys which it would need to have for that price:eek:
 
i think the biggest factor will be if you carry a pillion a lot of the time, as the 1200GSA is much roomier with the twin seat set up. smoother , faster, lighter

as stated they are both great bikes , but if you have 7k to spend that will get you a very nice 1150 with some left to spend on goodie's:thumb2
 
Having had both, here is my 2pworth,

I had a 1200GSA last year, thought i'd died and gone to heaven, this really is the best bike on the planet, ever built, ever. Did some trips on it, some very long, some short, absolutely faultless bike, end of. Fantastic engine/box/brakes/suspension/(what else is there?). 50 mpg to boot! Only slight niggle was the finish, No, sorry, being too fussy.......

Got rid last December, (company bike).

Then i bought an 1150 GSA...............

IMHO, first impressions were not good. Boy oh boy it's heavy!!!!!!, and, it's slower, not as good on fuel, doesnt handle quite as well as the 1200, Feck me it's heavy..............but........i love it! Did i mention the weight?

They sort of grow on you, hard to describe really, i have thought about this over the past few weeks, and come up with the reason....

The 1200 was/is very good at what it does, perfect in fact, in every way, but you know what the 1150's got that the 1200 doesn't?



Soul.......Now that might sound silly but i found in comparison, the 1200 was just maybe too 'clinical' for me. I want a motorcycle that growl's, shakes a bit, coughs now and again, has a few foibles, has a 'knack' too starting it etc, etc.

Would i go back too a 1200? in all honesty, probably yes, but i'd miss my 1150 though......

Thanks for all the advice,depending on how i get on with test rides i think at the moment i am favouring 1150gsa.I am going to lie down now in a dark room and consider my options:drool
 
I realise that this is beside the point regarding actually riding the things, but a good 1150 GSA is a 100% classic motorcycling icon that will never be anything less than wonderful, and should hold its value strongly...

They are without doubt awesome bikes chad but iv just come back from 1800miles round spain and at 5'10 im just not comfortable with the weight,i know alot of the guys here say "so you drop it fcuk it thats what there for"but mines to nice to lob down repeatedly on the ground so thats why im finaly selling it,your a fcuking giant you can pick yours up between your knees and turn it round:augie :Motomartin

Hi,mate.Think i am going to get a 1150GSA,just got to sell Tenere first.Bloke coming Monday to have a look, says if he likes it will pay cash and ride home.Will let you know what/when i get one.( like the look of CHEROKEES).Check out for sales. Regards Richard.:thumb2

That strikes me as a bit odd.........you're a fit bloke (IIRC :nenau) and at 5 10 you shouldn't have any problem really :nenau

Not taking the piss, but have you ever been shown how to pick up a GS properly?
There's a definite technique which makes it so much easier and I would imagine that once you've got it, you'll feel much more comfortable with it :)
 
i have an 1150... 8 years old and still minty... ok, fork brace and lower legs a bit flaky...but Hammerite is a wonderfull thing... i've been more and more tempted by a 12GSA..... but.... every one i've seen with mileage higher then 12k seems to be rusting quicker then a 1970's Vauxhall...

i went to look at a 1200 GSA in white at Vines on Saturday... around £9k... rusty stand, rusty frame where boots have destroyed paint, various rusty fittings...... this would really pee me off.. i use my bikes, not always cleaned and often put away wet... i also live 100yds from sea so air is deffo very salty..i cannot bear the thought of owning a rusty flaky 10k bike!!!.. ( i still want one though... so i'll have to buy a new one and not ride it!):hide:hide
