Moto piston Rally 2012

Looks like there might be a split in the Moto Piston Club, I've just had an email re a classic rally in Colombres in October :nenau

http://www.motoclubindianos.com/

I think I will probably try the Colombres rally instead of the Santander event.

Apparently not a split, looks like an attempt to cash in on the MotoPiston club's event. I've just had this email from the MP organisers.

Ho Hum, decisions, decisions. I think I will do the Santander Moto Pistons rally rather than risk what could be a small amaturish rally set up by disgruntled businesses in Colombres chasing the tourist euro.
Maybe next year for the Colombres rally if it turns out well this year.

Bump. Only 6 weeks to go :)

I have decided to take my GS850G Suzuki again, riding from Roscoff down through France and back the same way using the small roads.

I am at my place (45 minutes inland from La Rochelle) from the 28th September to 2nd October before riding down to the Rally for Wednesday evening on the 4th Oct. Anyone riding down through western France on these dates would like free accomodation in the Charente Maritime for a night or two, PM me.

current plan for me is through the tunnel around 0800 on the 4th October and spend Thursday/Friday riding down... camping on the way....

Friday Night Santander, plus Sat and Sun AM..... Leave Sunday PM, and head back towards the Mountains...back through France for 1900 tunnel on Tuesday the 9th.....

Route via N roads, no tolls TA..... camping and doing it as cheap as possible...

so, who's going and how do i ensure i meet up with some one for a few beers Friday/Saturday night!!

Hi im coming up from southern spain to catch the santander ferry to pompey on the 3rd just heard about the moto piston meet and thinking i might try and change my ferry date and stay over for the meet specially if theres lots of gsers there sounds like a good meeting !!

I'll be arriving Friday pm, leaving Sunday am.......planning on camping if possible...or cheap hotel....so who's actually going to be around?

Santander - Info

I'm staying in the Santemar, the rallye hotel, but only coz my buddies had already booked. I would have preferred to stay in Hotel Boutique Las Brisas, Calle La Brana which is around the corner and much cheaper and looks like a classy 'fin de siecle' type establishment.

As some of you have been before, any recommendations for Tosser preferred reataurants / bars ???

Cheers
Mike

Santander

Ay up Mike - been at the last 2 years events.

In Santander we used Calle De Hernan Cortes for most of the bars and Calle del Rio De La Pia to eat.

Once you get to Calle De Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola turn right - if you look to you left there is a great arch above the road - usually has the flag of Spain flying above it - so you'll know your on the right street.

Walk a few hundred yards and you'll come to a small roundabout go round it in johnny foriegneer direction of travel and take your second exit. This is Del Rio De La Pia street.

Good restaurant on the left with big wooden barrels set above the bar (cant remember the name) bit expensive but quality. Or further up on the right there is restaurant Cantabria - all the hams hung above your head as usual.

Walk through the bar and go upstairs here but remember wherever you eat on say Sat night it will be busy and probably require a table booking. We had good food at both these establishments.

Hope that helps mate - would meet up but cant make this year. :thumb2

Hi,

I am also leaving on Thursday 04 October to get to Santander on the afternoon/night of Friday. I would be keen to know if this is still your plans and maybe meet at the UK end of the tunnel so as to ride down with you.

Regards

daniel

All Brittany Ferries sailings to France cancelled until further notice.

West Country news reported tonight that all Brittany Ferries sailings to France are cancelled until further notice due to strike action by French employees.

Hopefully the strikes will not spread to the Spanish crossings and be resolved before the rally starts.

BBC ..

Crossings with Brittany Ferries have been "cancelled until further notice" following two days of wildcat strikes.

Ferries from Portsmouth and Plymouth to France and Spain have been suspended indefinitely

UK to Malaga via Santander - Asturias

Hi Daniel, happy to ride down together... I'm booked on the 0820 check in closes at 0750....let me know where you want to meet...:thumb2

Richard....

Have you done this route before? I am trying to see if it is viable to actually reach Santander on the Friday afternoon/evening, as I am meeting my passenger there, to then head to Asturias either that same afternoon/evening or on Saturday and down to Malaga on Sunday.

How is the toll way system in France?

I have looked at google maps and it seems like a long full day riding on Thursday and Friday to get to Santander on the afternoon of Friday?

regards

Hi Daniel,

Yes, ive done it before but from Caen and St Malo, first time through the tunnel on that route, it will add a few hours for sure. i'm not on a deadline and plan on using more intresting roads then the most direct toll roads. i do not have to be in Santander, it was just a target for the Saturday, in fact i am planning to camp 60-70 miles away Friday night nearer the mountains and day trip the Moto Piston Rally... it puts me in a better position for the Sunday ride through the Spanish Pyranees...The Toll Roads in France are fantastic, but make sure you go to the toll booths marked for bikes.... that's a very important tip as the car drivers at car booths get frustrated at you fumbling for change/putting your gloves on etc.....

Santander is an easy ish two day ride at about 800 miles all in.... so i normally do around 200 in the morning, lunch 200 in the afternoon camp and so on.... the northern french toll roads are less congested then the road south of Bordeaux which sees a greater concentration of lorries etc heading for Spain/Portugal. With this in mind i try and get an extra 80 or so miles in on day one...... depends on weather/tiredness etc....as mentioned i do not impose a time constraint other then the return 2 hour tunnel window.

As mentioned if you are at the Tunnel between 745 and 0820 on Thursday say hi......Yellow GS 1150/Tin boxes/fat rider......( there is still a chance i'll be on a 16 year old HD...)

can't recall ever seeing one

my view is, french car drivers can get as frustrated as they like. it's their stupid system - they can live with it. fuck 'em.

seems a far point!.

its the automated booths you should avoid on a bike, (you pay car toll rates)where possible go to the booth with people in...

I had a bollocking of a Female Frog Attendant 'cos as I skidded and slid towards the only booth on the right in a snow storm  and knowing that with useless gloves (wet) freezing hands, in late November, I managed to stop away from the Booth in order to let cars go through while I struggled to stand let alone walk :augie Madame chose to halt the cars, shout at me to park my M/Cycle under her snotty little nose and pay, while the poor little Frogs in their little French Autos got frustrated as I took my time to comply. Ah the joys of the Beujolais Run in the good old days of yore :bow:bow

Picture depicts what it was like! Can't find the actual pics from 1983 in France, this was later in the year at Pen-y-Pontfaur :roll

Just got back from frog, and went to bike only booth. They were credit card only, I wanted to use cash so f....d the system completely. Got off the bike and walked to a cashier, paid her and they opened the barrier. Complete PITA. Manned booth for me now and talk to a human- happy to piss of the car drivers. Always tell them that bikes should be free to avoid the hold up.!!!

I seem to remember that when they had the Bol D'or at Ricard they made the Autoroutes free for bikes to avoid hold ups.

tolls in France

Hi,

Thank you all for the heads up on the French tolls. I better pull my thumb out and get going with trying to get some electronic toll tag.

I hope the weather improves, the idea of 2 long days pissing in rain is not that attractive, considering I have spoken to friends in the south of Spain which are complaining that it is still in the mid 30 during the day.
