Servo Brakes

I've followed a thread on the BMW Club site re the removal of servo & ABS from 1150 series bikes and it would appear to be a viable option ( in order to ditch the reliance of braking on a fuse and the prospect of only 'residual' braking, possibly in a situation when full brake power is desperately needed ).

Has anyone any experiance of the 'conversion' to 'normal' brakes by removing the servo and re-plumbing the system.

If so how effective are the revised brakes ?

Also is there any effect on insurance premium / validity ?

I know that one or two people on here have junked the ABS unit on a non servo bike when it failed and replaced the hoses with the braided type with no negative impact on the braking.
I guess that the servo brakes are a little more involved.
Effects on insurance premium?.Well they dont give a discount if you do have ABS,so as long as the modifications are carried out competently with decent parts and they meet Constuction and Use regulations,i would say there wasn't a problem.
I would ask the insurance company for their take on it first though.

Like you its not on my must do next list, just checking out the validity of the option.

I don't relishthe prospect of an expensive repair bill should the servo fail ( the bike is 5 years old ). If the option to remove the servo is vaiable I'd rather do that in the next few months with the intention keeping what is an excellent bike for quite a few more years.

It would appear that the Plumbing bit is straight forward, just the electrics need a bit of thought.

Has anyone an indication of possible cost ?

Cost of what ????? Doing the job yourself or paying someone else to do it -main dealer ( who i'd think would run a mile from such a job) or N.E.other type of garage. :nenau

Parts = two brake switches, and a front brake hose or link pipe.

I'd be tempted to take the servo unit off while it's still working, and sell it for £££'s.
 
i'm sure there's a million more things that may never happen ;)

Sorry, should have defined cost required

Basically a guide cost for the work to be done by local bike mechanic, a guide to parts cost and labour time would be helpfull , or indeed an quote from yourself would be appreciated

Ride the bike more with the time gained and no worries re brakes ( double result )

Guys, Just to be clear on this thread, does deactivation of the servo still leave ABS working OK?

I doubt it - description in the other thread is of routing each master cylinder directly to the corresponding brake calipers, so there's nothing left to do the ABS bit.

I'm guessing that the servo/ABS electronics and mechanicals will all be integrated as a single unit? Somebody who knows for certain will probably be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong...
