I fitted my Ilmberger hugger at Xmas, after a very long wait, which I believe may be due to a redesign

This hugger was supplied by my BMW dealer and is supplied to them by http://www.sandbarcomposites.co.uk/

I was very impressed by the fit and lack of any interferences and also by the ease of fitting

However... after one week vibrations started because the rubber stop, which rests against the swing arm has disappeared. I called into the dealer, who called Sandbarcomposites and ordered a new rubber stop

I called in a week later and still it hadn't arrived, so the dealer called Sandbar again to re order the stop. All of these phonecalls I overheard and one week later... still no stop has arrived and my hugger is vibrating, not badly but it is annoying me.

Today I called in, after waiting nearly a month and the dealer has kindly given me a stop off a new hugger. Top marks to the dealer and I do not know what has caused the lack of delivery of the stop from Sandbar.

So... I removed the rear wheel to fit the rubber stop and discovered a hole in the hugger:

I have Araldited the stop in situ this time, as you see from the pic and also used surplus Araldite to repair the hole.

The 07 1200GSA has Tourances with an estimatable 2cm clearance all around the hugger

There is also loads of clearance behind the shock:

(You can see cling film against the swing arm to prevent Araldite contact)

Obviously something is rubbing but I need further loaded testing to find out if it is the tyre or the shock and will report when I know

I haven't reported this to the dealer or Sandbar yet until I know the cause... but I will !

No adjustment is possible with the fitting position of this hugger.

I estimate 500 miles since fitting and no offroad use

Just reporting to you all :(

:D

I have the exact same problem on same bike. Same size hole in same place.

It seems to be only an issue when the bike is fully laden for touring etc making the hugger rub against the bottom of the rear shock on compression.

I’ve basically ignored it over the winter , but would be interested in any solutions others have come up with.

Your supposed to have taken the shock shield off..........

there isn't enough clearance with the shield in place when the suspension rises. It's in the instructions for a reason

'08 fitting question

Anyone know if it's necessary to take off the shroud on the '08 GS with ESA when fitting the Ilmberger?

The shrould seems to be attached with three bolts two of which look seriously like the type that cause bits of the shock to fall off when removed:tears

Can you tell if the hugger is fouling on the bottom of the shock - or is it the shock shroud?

CORRECT Terayon :thumb

Supplied printed instructions say:
'Then remove the original suspension strut protection cover to get enough space for your rear-fender skirt.'

I didn't and cannot remember if I didn't :rtfm or whether I looked and saw loads of clearance. There is certainly plenty of clearance one up with no load.

I suspect at this stage that I have been a :censor:

Mk 2

One of the places where it hit on my 1200GSA.
Not through to a hole but it would have been had I kept it on.

Yes the standard cover was off and I also rtfm.

This was the bigger worry......
