Screen bliss...

When I changed to the Adventure I though the stock screen would be big improvement over the standard 1200 screen which gave me a lot of noise and buffeting- I was wrong. After a bit of fannying about with different screen positions which required chopping off the daft wee nipples on the screen adjusters I gave up and fitted my Nippy Normans High Wide screen today.

Result!

Just in case the short term memory is a bit dodgy, here's the stock Adventure screen- it'll save you a trip out to he garage for a look...don't say I'm not good to you.

Now the new ( well it was when I bought it..) Nippy High Wide.

I had to remove the Adventure screen brace thing and fiddle about with the adjusters to get it to fit but it didn't take long and I didn't break or loose anything which is a first for me. It's a bit of a close fit with the winglets and I might chop a bit off the back of the screen so that it can be adjusted a bit more vertical if needed.

So a good result and a personal cure for the buffeting- everyone seems to have a different way to improve the standard screen and at 5 foot 8 1/2 inches this works well for me.

I've just fitted the NN high n wide on my 05 1200gs. Agree a great result :clap

but I seem to have acquired an aviary!! :blast

Any ideas on how to stop the low speed squeaking.

On the same topic, I had an R1200RT out as a loaner from JC's yesterday whilst the Gs was in for it's 12k service. It had a 'quiet' button which worked really well. With the push of a button the screen powered up and all was quiet. Richt ora lookin bike mind you!!

Re. the aviary

I have a NN high+wide on a 05 GS. It was on it when I got it. It made the bird noises and whatever I tried - tightening, loosening, adjusting, it was still there. I took the screen off the other day to put in some HIDs, and since I put it back on it has been quiet as a baby. No obvious reason why.

So in summary - nothing helpful to say about actually getting rid of the noise, other than to confirm it can be gotten rid of - I just don't know how!

PS my NN screen is full of little defects - it looks like internal shattering in paches when it catches the sun - bad enough that I want to replace it - does anyone else have this?

is its small cracks the screen has been bent, twisted etc so it has infact cracked - would send it back if its fairly new.

A lot will depend on how you fit the screen. If it's under any tension / stress then it'll crack fairly quickly. So, if I was NN, I'd not be impressed with a returned screen that wasn't unused but was claimed to be "faulty". I guess it would depend on how trustworthy he thinks you are, or how much business he thinks he'll get from you in the future.

Is it a constant whistling. :augie

If so, its the gap between the bottom of the screen and the headlight. Test it out by sticking a piece of tape over the gap. Mine required it on the dip side. Was only evident with tobinators on.

yes very true... all depends on the installation to an extent but as its flexible then the distortion has to be significant and normally beyond the realm of having one side adjusted higher/lower than the other and this would have to be forced into position 2 do that.... but anyway..............

i fitted the NN winglets the other day - the template isnt 100% accurate but its good enough, after fitting which is a piece of pee, i went for a run and can say it has reduced the buffeting quite a bit so now i can do 140kmh without any probs - but as there are no brackets on the frame for the winglets u have to use a packer between the snout and the windscreen frame to stop the snout "arms" from twisting and vibrating when at idle....

Hi yer WGD, it’s coming from the bottom of the screen where the knobs to adjust the angle are, I can recreate it when stopped just by gently flexing the screen. Will try and when its out tomorrow slackening the ‘knobs’. I fitted a torbinator vibration eliminator kit as well.

Ah, mine only did it when moving at around 60mph. Similar concept to blowing over a hole in a flute, it caused a high pitched whistle, just like someone whistling aimlessly with only one note. Yes I had a full T'bers kit on with anti vibration eliminators too. All the bling went on eBay a few weeks ago...

Bike goes jus as well without it all but still leaning towards selling cos of screen buffeting/noise issues.
