I have managed to dismantled my GS enough to investigate the loss of forward motion.
The process was fairly painless until I got to the last bit. The gearbox was a right bitch to seperate from the engine.
As Steptoe accurately predicted, I have found that the friction plate is completed forked and the input shaft splines are also damaged. I'm not sure if they are worn enough to require a new shaft or not. Advice please :)
Interestingly, there is evidence of some lube still on the splines of the shaft. I thought this failure was caused by the absence of lube from the factory build?
I've got some pictures here...

Here's a much clearer picture of the wear on the input shaft.

I have edited your post to show the pictures within SS.

That is identical to mine from my 1150RT, went late last year at about 50,000 miles.

Still got the busted bits in the garage for some daft reason:blast

When mine was repaired the gearbox bearings and seals were renewed too.

Including the new shaft and clutch it cost me just a tad under £ 1,000 :blast

Someone who knows more than me will be along soon, but I reckon you need a new input shaft.

My guess as well. A new friction plate isn't going to last long at all. But maybe long enough to sell it.

So, I should bodge and get shot of it? I think the guy I bought it from knew something was about to give!

Motorworks will do a 2nd hand replacement for £45 apparently.

Is it really not worth the hazzle of replacing the input shaft?

4 months of BMW ownership and now misery

same thing happened on my '01 1150. 30,000mls.got s/h shaft(complete with gears),new clutch plate & seals from motorworks. £150:00 the lot.followed instructions in haynes manual and used loads of heat when stripping box.not too bad of a job for a reasonably competent person.found the gearbox to be alot smoother after re-build.

Cheers for that. This is an '04 with 32k on the clock. I've got a good mind to take it to my local BMW dealer and ask for a contribution towards the parts and labour.
As I've done all the labour, that won't cost 'em much :P

Finally got my rebuilt gearbox back from Vines! They haven't charged me a penny ... yet! I picked it up on Saturday when the service personnel weren't there :thumb

It took 3.5 weeks to get the parts from Germany? Heaven only knows why.

Now to put the beast back together? Can I find all the parts after 4 weeks I have to ask myself?
