Oh bugga,

Camping up in lakes, bike running fine, parked up for a brew on the way back, decided to move bike - EWS fault and the warning triangle- end of ride- currently waiting at home for bike to be rerecovered to dealers for I asssume a new ring bit to be fitted.
F800GS - Unstartable :blast:augie

top tip also- BMWs recovery wont sort you out with a hire car on a Sunday unless you have your driving license with you

The ring is the circular bit around the key hole that picks up the code.

Lifting the seat I spied something that looks suspiciously like the fuel pump controller that failed on my 1200GSA in Morocco last month. Hopefully this version will be more reliable.

You bought an 800 Tim? I thought it was your battery in the 1200 that failed.

At least they don't use plastic gears to drive the water propeller shaft like on the F650 :spitfire. Or do they ...

Hell I missed that, he did say he was going last time we had breakfast :D

He's a cracking kid. :thumb2

Apparently Blue Sweeper said something like ... "so is this Snoopy really a tosser then?" to Bob and Bob retorted with a good word. Not sure where my reputation came from :augie

It's a trade off snoopy, we get water pump failures, everyone else gets ews and fuel pump failures :D not to mention the final drives :hide

Bmw did it to make sure we all felt equal :thumb2

Oh, airheads are exempt cos they are out of the ark and therefore immune to failure :augie

Bike fixed this morning [ new part number for the "ring aerial" ] and delived back home by Mondial assistance- been assured that this new part number will be okay:thumb

My F800st packed in yesterday with this  it seems there will now be a recall .

EWS replacement

Just been speaking to my dealer. They are replacing all EWS units. Anyone else heard anything?

just spoke to my dealer, my F800Gs is due to arrive next week, and he mentioned to me that they are recalling all the 650/800 to change the EWS, while the new ones should be alright

cheers

EWS ON 800GS

Tash's got changed today as part of an issue with them and BMW are changing them on the 800 as a matter of course.

EWS Failure

Popped down to my local petrol station on the 800, filled the tank, turned the key - nothing! Except for the dreaded yellow warning light and a message saying EWS. Having had the same thing happen to me in Italy with the 1200, I knew the drill involved taking the bike to the dealers.

Called BMW assistance - car turns up in 20 minutes. I had expected a flatbed but no sweat. We remove the top panel, the BMW man hooks up a spare EWS ring he has with him, we hold that over the ignition lock, I turn the key and the engine starts! He tells me that I can turn the engine off with the kill switch and restart it but not to turn the engine off with the key or it will stay off. I get a demo, yes, exactly as the man says.

I zoom over to South London Motorcycles who are expecting me, the new service manager - Phil - takes it into the shop and about 25 minutes later, a new EWS has been installed.

Brilliant service from all concerned and a very grateful customer. I am due to go to Salisbury plain at the weekend and the thought of an EWS failure there doesn't really thrill me. Equally, to have the bike up and running in such a short time is terrific and my weekend plan is still a go.

Allow me....

Brilliant service :thumb

Poo electronics :barf:barf:barf

...and THAT's why I am still concerned.... :eek
...and THAT's why I might consider the old "down to basic" BMW's when going for the change :rob

You got lucky this time.... :hide

Bluejay

I was very lucky this time! In May it happened on top of a mountain in the snow with a very cold wind blowing. This time around it might have been on Saturday when I hope to be also a good way from anywhere.

Like you, if I wanted a bike to go RTW, I'd be looking for an older bike with foolproof electrics..

Nice to hear that everything was solved so quickly.

Could you post more details about what was removed and were the connection is located ?

I've removed the top panel and even a plastic part that surrounds the ignition key on my girlfriend's F650GS, but I did not find the connectors for the antenna ring.

We're going on a 4 week trip to the south of Argentina by year's end and I want to be prepared. Luckily, it's the same spare part that I have to carry for the 1200 Adventure ...

Out of interest, did you try rolling the bike away from the station and try the ignition again? I heard that local electrical intereferance can affect the antenna.

Conrado,

On the 800, the connector is underneath the rectangular plastic box that is fixed to the rear of the ring as you sit on the bike. It is a fiddle to remove the connecting wire and the BMW assistance guy had a hooked tool to help. On the 800 and I guess on the 650 too, the ring antenna is rotated 180 degrees compared to the 1200 as is the ignition/steering lock (provides more lock on the bars than the 1200)

Twisticles,

I hadn't heard about about interference issue and the BMW guy didn't mention it. Both he and I did try the key several times when the bike had been moved to get it off the forecourt but t no avail.

As a matter of interest do you know if your bike was one of those on the recall list for a new ring antenna? Mine was changed last week at the 6000 mile service but I hadn't had a prior recall notice. I'd had no problems with it. They seem to be just changing them on an ad hoc basis when the bike happens to be with the dealer.
