Hi Guys

I bought a Quest last year which i really like even though it has some shortcomings.

Well it got me to Russia and back and then catastrophe!! - I dropped it in Betws y Coed and snapped the integral antenna off!

Does anyone know where I could get hold of a replacement antenna. Or does anyone have an old knackered Quest that I could procure and nab the antenna from?

Cheers

Simon

Just buy one of the external jobies and stick it to the windscreen and plug in the cable.....:augie

I dropped the bike on top of my Quest - emailed Garmin UK with the sad tale and they told me to send it in for a free replacement antenna. That's why my next GPS will be a Garmin

If all else fails buy a cheap external antenna on eBay

My Quest made a break for freedom from my bike last year at aroung fifty miles an hour. I managed to find it (well, one of the guys riding with me found it) and the only damage was a missing ariel. The machine still powered up but could not locate any satellites so I called garmin and sent the machine back to them and it was replaced with a brand new unit, all for £85 if memory serves.

Top service from Garmin :thumb

Thanks for info...and 2 more questions

Thanks for the happy takes guys. I'll contact Garmin. I did have a think about the external antenna but my bike mount covers the socket on the unit - although I suppose that it isn't anything a drill wouldn't fix!

Does anyone know if the reception is much better with an external antenna? When I was near and in Russia the quest had me about half a mile from the actual road I was on most of the time. I figured that this was either a reception issue or a secret Russian military discombobulation signal trying to stop me from finding a capitalist pig petrol station.

Any ideas?

S

I have an external aerial for my Quest which had the well known internal breakage that stopped the aerial working.

I never directly compared the satellite signal strength before and after, but my gut feeling is certainly that the signal is stronger- obviously you can mount the new puck anywhere and that gives you a better 'view' of the sky, so the chances are it is going to be better :thumb2
(Mine is on my Beak, with the wiring going under it, through a hole under the adv plastic bit and running back an inch to the puck- it looks quite neat and unobtrusive)

I got a second one as well (before the aerial fault came along) as when I used the Quest in my Land Rover, the reception was pants- a vertical windscreen didn't help matters I guess but the external aerial, stuck on a plate 6 inches above the roofrack made a huge difference.

They are a bit fiddle to connect up every time though and the little brass ferrules that make up the outside of the plug aren't very strong- I broke one off fairly early on when first using the external aerial.

PS with Quest 1's going for under £80 on Ebay now, it doesn't realty seem worth sending them back to Garmin for a refurb :nenau

Hmmmmmm ........ if one gets a "new" Quest for £85 does it come with an unlock code for the latest mapping? (probably wishful thinking)

The Garmin service/replacement program usually provides a good as new factory refurb unit, all the bits and pieces and current mapping. In effect you get a white box as good as new factory refurb. However, they may no longer have any Quests held in stock. I these circumstances they have been known to upgrade to the next available unit although that would probably be a big step from a Quest, they would probably ask for more money and you'd get a white box 2720 or something like that. Would still be a bargain tho', a reward for your loyalty to Garmin. Although bear in mind that if this happens you'll need to buy a new bike mount as these aren't in the box, only the car mount.

Have a look here and select 'Quest' from the drop down menu, you'll see in the comment box that "Prices include the latest software where applicable.". I know this is for the US but the European policy should be the same.

I had no problem uploading the (then) latest maps to mine using my existing code.

I've got a fair bit of knowledge of sending things back to garmin and yes you are right but they still have quest replacements so they will be able to replace it if needs be. But there's a high chance that it will be only the unit and not a fully boxed unit.

Hope this helps.:thumb

I have omly just read this, so I hope I am not to late. I have got a garmin quest on ebay at the moment. It will not switch on, so I am selling it for spares or repair. Might be of use to you.
