In May 2008 I bought a pair of Machine-Art X-heads from Nippy Normans for my R1200GS. They looked lovely. However, the first occasion on which they were “tested” was Monday morning, 8 December, when I skidded on an icy bend at about 15-20 mph and the bike went over on its right side, and when being picked up was dropped onto its left side. Both of the X-heads snapped off from where they were fixed to the bike. The one on the right side cracked before it came off, and the rocker cover was badly damaged as the bike skidded on the road – exactly the sort of damage which the X-heads are supposed to prevent. The one on the left snapped off and the rocker cover was grazed by the road surface. The X-heads completely failed, and as a result my bike now needs new rocker/spark plug covers.

I wasn’t going to do anything but put it down to experience and a poor piece of kit which totally failed to afford any sort of protection when called upon. However, I notice that the NN website says,

“The X-head is designed to protect both the valve and spark plug covers. If a bike is dropped at speed, any material will wear at the point of contact, but polycarbonate will not break or puncture. Even a driveway drop will cause a bike to roll onto the face of the valve cover and X-Head’s wide shape helps to protect more area than other head covers.”

So: I sent the (broken) units to NN, who contacted me and offered me a replacement set or a set of the Touratech – which I chose and fitted this weekend. Look great, but not planning on testing them any time soon!

Anyway – great service from Nippy Normans, who get double thumbs up for great customer service.

maybe you should post this in our product review section to let others know of the poor product
Plus £110 for a couple of bits of plastic seems a bit high in the first place

like most rocker protectors, attached to points on the bike wich are not strong, bling value only, get some crashbars

"Who fitted them...was it operator error?"
I did, and possibly I made an error (too tight - don't know, I am pretty good at following instructions) - couldn't rule out "operator error", I suppose.
"Did NN offer to replace rocker covers etc"
No but I think that would have been pushing it, don't you? I think certain things in life have to be put down to experience...
"expensive for 2 bits of plastic"
Yes, perhaps - but not if they had prevented the damage!
There are a number of other posts on this forum where the X heads are recommended, and people seem pleased with them - whether you like the look or not is a matter of personal taste.

ive got a set on my 07 gs and havnet had a problem with them, granted, got them fitted as well as the sw motech upper and lower bars, but when i dropped the bike a few times in the sh**y weather resently they did their job, granted didnt take the full force of the impact but i dont think that they are designed to do so
yes v expensive for some bits of plastic but but cheaper that the tt versions or the bmw ones and imo they look a bit better!

Lots of :thumb for engine crash bars, but really depends on what type you go for.
The standard BMW 12ADV ones are made from butter and will bend fairly easily in a medium spill.. If you go sliding they'll dig in and collapse altogether.

Even in a low speed spill the engine bars don't prevent the cylinder heads getting damaged.
Not sure how much better the other brands are?

Enginer bars are definitely better than nout, but don't rely on them as foolproof armour..
