Almost got 1000 miles on it now since October...............yeh I know fair weather rider, but honest just too busy at the moment.

I went out last weekend but pushing the bike out of the garage in gear I noticed quite major clutch drag. Trying to start it in gear the engine would turn over slugishly but started and ticked over ok.

I know there have been a few comments on drag (clutch not :ymca) but this is quite noticable is this experienced by anyone else and should I return to dealer?

take it out of gear
and start it
does it do it now

no?

then keep doing it that way

case done nx :D

Yep do that usually, but want to know is the drag normal, it isnt noticable on the 1200 or the Jap bikes I have.

when the bike is at running temp
turn off
then stick in gear and start
does it do it now ....remeber runing temp

if it does trade in for 1150gsa :thumb2

Some clutch drag is normal...

Every 800/650 I have ridden, exhibits a certain degree of clutch drag. With the bike running, pull in the clutch and wait 5 seconds, then select first gear. Every example of these models "clunks' and lurches noticeably (not so on the "R" bikes). This is indicative of some clutch drag as part of the design.

However, as I don't usually start my bike in gear, I don't know if what is being discussed here is representative of excessive drag. YMMV, I guess...
:mmmm:beerjug:

I make a point of always leaving my bike in first gear as it helps prevent fallover accidents on slopes and it's easier to control when moving around when you can't easily reach the front brake lever.

For me, excessive drag is when I have to strain to get the bike to move even an inch.

Yes that is what I am talking about....................obviously a South Coast thing, need to go see Mr Dealer after a few more miles just to make sure.

I've just had my bike in for a service and other fixes. The clutch drag is now much improved; you can feel the difference between trying to move it in neutral against in first with the clutch in, but at least you don't need to be imitating the 'strong man' truck pull to get the thing moving.

Clutch Free Adjustment - some help please

Just picked up an 800 and first impressions are very good despite the 'running-in' factor. Only small issue is that I would like the clutch bite to be a little sooner on release, perhaps 60% of the way as opposed to the 85% it currently feels.

To remedy this is it a simple case of adjusting the cable i.e. undo the lock nut and reduce(?) current tension. If so, any pitfalls?

Thanks.

Clutch slip already?

Riding home yesterday afternoon, baking hot, pulled out to overtake a couple of cars and gave it full throttle in third. Get along side cars and engine revs increasing but bike not getting any quicker. Tucked back in before I go head on into an approaching car. Since then, it hasn't slipped again, even when I took it to the steepest hill I know locally, and rode up and down a few times.

The bike's got just under 3,000 miles on it and is only three months old. Never been off road. Lever not touching handguard.

Anyone know what could have caused it?

Clutch slip

Hi, Have you got hand guards fitted if so make sure the one on the left side has not moved and is catching the clutch lever.

Clutch being stripped !!

Have today booked the bike into NOG. If using full throttle in 3rd 4th, or 5th, the bike will spin into the red as soon as the revs hit 6000. NOG say this is the first 800 they have had back with a slipping clutch.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

The bike was new in March 09. It's done 3,200 miles and never been off road or wheelied, and no, the clutch lever doesn't touch the hand guards.

Clutch slip already? Oh yes..It could be worse!!

I have just had my clutch fully rebuilt by a dealer in Algeseras in spain... It started slipping after getting off the ferry from portsmouth to bilbao. Bike only had 900 miles on the clock, After adjusting several times to get the correct tollerance on the cable it finally decided to go into meltdown in morocco. A ferry trip back to Algeceras and four days of waiting while it was replaced really caused me and my mate a load of stress, and of course a really frustrating bike holiday.. My advice is to go straight to your dealer and get it looked at!!

clutch gone

bike came back from dealers having had new chain and sprockets. was riding it all day saturday and half way through the day, it just began revving into the red with no power delivery. on top of that, the gear positioning sensor has just gone again too. they seem to be prone to damp getting inside them, and we were hit by noahic floods on saturday.

taken by roadside assistance.

so apparently the clutch hasn't gone at all. allegedly the cable had somehow managed to tighten itself up and now that the dealer has loosened it, the bike is riding perfectly. this makes no sense to me at all as why at 3000revs in every gear would it slip to perfection? in any case, as long as it's riding fine. :nenau

NEW CLUTCH AT 3,200 MILES

Collected my 800GS this morning from NOG after they had fitted a new clutch. They said the original was "burnt out" and would be reported back to BMW as the bike's only done 3,200 miles.

Excellent service again from NOG.

They loaned me an '09 F650GS as a courtesy bike. After getting back on the 800, I noticed how much harder it is to get mine to turn into corners. Presumably the difference between front wheel sizes.

Slippin clutch on a 800gs

Was wondering if anyone has experienced their clutch slip when accelerating. Was in a tight spot tonight while riding home, accelerated to avoid a maniac bus driver, revs went up (sounded almost like an auto tranni in a car) but not much acceleration. Rather upsetting if it happened again and not as lucky!

Anyone had this happen before and why? Relatively new bike, over 3 months old now with just over 6000 miles (just done another trip to Italy) on the clock. Its going in for a service on Sat and will bring it up their!

Just had my clutch replaced under warranty. Exactly the same problem. Four months old and 3,200 miles.

Hey Martin

Did they say why it failed? I had the single pot 650 last year and gave no issues what so ever, as for this one, i hope it is not the beginning of the end.
