Just fitted a power commander to my 58 GSA, loaded the stock basic map shows up to 22% increase in fueling over the standard setup this has smoothed the idle and Completly sorted the low speed jerkyness and improved throttle responce,Still a little flat feeling at the upper end of the rev range but having a custom map done later this week so will update then. Have removed the cat and have a Boss rear can

Are you gonna fit a free flow air filter eg K&N ?

Not a good plan. A K&N is unlikely to give any significant increase in performance and will really only serve to allow more unfiltered particles into the engine.

I reckon after all those other mods to the bike, the standard air filter will prove the bottleneck in air flow and not allowing the possible optimum performance gain available. The stock pleated paper element is quite restrictive in its design.

As for filtration, the K&N works just fine at removing particles smaller than 10 microns. How clean do you need ??:nenau

Some quick 'n' dirty () illustrations of the K&N problem here....

However, there is a large amount of stuff all over the web about the compromised fitration abilties of oiled foam filters. It's also been done to to death on numerous automotive forums.

Suffice to say, I wouldn't fit a performance air filter but as ever, YMMV.

very doubtful that the stock air filter is restrictive unless dirty.

K&N's are very high maintainance and poor filters unless constantly cleaned and re-oiled - don't go near them for road vehicles.

Thanks for the link Schtum.

I strongly suspect the 'dirt' measured in the less than scientific article is merely some tiny particles of road dirt below 10 microns in size (eg diesel particluates in traffic smoke) and nothing worthy of causing premature engine wear.

If the stock filter is capable of flowing sufficient air, why do the dealers say you can fit a set of performance headers if you keep the standard air filter without the need for fuelling mods, but if the filter is also replaced fuelling mods are essential to prevent lean running and engine damage ?

Leaving the standard air filter in K&N filters have no noticeable effect on performance and are nearly three times the cost of a std paper element!

pressure drop testing is the measure of flow.

K&N's may have been the thing to get back inthe 70's / 80's but things have moved on now, with better designs.
No manufacturer is going to compromise performance with poorly designed air paths for the road rider - racing is another story.

Could use some help here. I got my 12GSA with the full Akro system and K&N filter, but no power commander and as far as I can guess :nenau no re-map...

It does feel pretty jerky at low speed/low revs, and feels like it's running rich with loads of popping and farting on decel.......

Would y'all recommend a power commander? I'm assuming in my naivety, a re-map is not possible....

You will get loads of popping and farting with the CAT removed and an aftermarket can which shouldn't be a problem.

Try putting the standard filter back on and do you run with the baffle in? Baffle in makes it run better IMHO.

If you feel you need the K&N, I would always recommend a power commander for the fuelling.

I agree with Bilco on that. Tried my GSA with Remus headers and can with and without baffle and it runs better with.

There's also some tests done which show having a K&N and de-cat will lean out the engine at approaching full throttle, although from memory they'd also done the airbox mod.

Either way, removing the K&N and putting the baffle in is a much cheaper and easier solution than a PC.

Thanks chaps....looks like the baffle is going back in :( I love the sound without, but it does run better when in....

I keep my baffle in because some guy living just up the hill from me rides a blue SV650 without a baffle and comes and goes all hours of the day and night, his bike is seriously annoying to me and my neighbours and I'd hate to look and sound as big a twat as he does.

Hi Surmanator,

Reading your comment re: "22% increase in fuelling", does this mean you lose 22% of your total range with a full tank???

I would love to fit headers & can but wonder if the missus will approve if we have to increase our yearly fuel bill by 22%!!!

Cheers!
