I know its a long way off, but for some, the cost doing one of these trips takes a lot of saving for.
Ive got white line fever and need a fix.
I made it to North Italy last year but bad weather kept us playing in the mountains instead of going south.
So i want to go back and finish what i started.
Heres some of the places i'll be going,France, Austria,Stelvio pass, offenpass, fluelapass, the the guzzi factory and then across to see Venice and drop down to rome and see how far south i can get before i turn for home and try and get there and back in 10 days ish.
Ive made it a south east section tour because its easier to sort out stuff when you live nearby.but if you really wanna come you can.
A roads,no motorways,no toll roads (there're boring),camping if nice, hotels if needbe,whatever,cruisin at 70-80mph, no heroics,300-500 miles a day.
Fuel stops every 130-150 mls(important if you ride jap)not so for gs riders.
Itinery is very flexible,as are the dates, august is a no no in italy, its closed, hence september.
Crossing by early boat,it gives you time for a full english.(tossers delight),i may come back via spain and through france Reims etc millau bridge,i know i nice hotel near Granada in spain.
I will organise most stuff apart from you, thats your job.I want to try and stop overnight in some nice places, and wish to stop riding before it gets dark, so as to find time for a beer and a steak.(mistake learned from last time)
i'll be at the hograost if you want a chat or if you are worried about being a touring virgin.
All the best,Paul

I do like the sound of that trip Paul, tres muchly :thumb2

Perhaps a chat @ the hog raost / sept camp too would be good :D

Cheers :beerjug:

I've always wanted to ride to the south of Italy so sign me up for that, I have a client there in Catanzaro Lido, it would be great to ride there rather than fly for a change.

I'm thinking about it, yes it does hurt:D

budget on...

Budget around £100 a day,30-50lts fuel per day,hotel/camp, steak and beer, and voila and there you go , thats a hundred quid gone.doh!!! yeehaw.
My bike does approx 10 miles to a litre.
Ferry is about £40ish, ill get those thru. the ferry club, its cheaper.
Time span around 10 days all in, budget around a grand odd.
i did look at the calender and thought i may kick off on the 9th june 2011
Youre best bet is to save up around £80-100 a month, then when you get back there will be no credit card bill to pay, sorted.
Also guys note this trip is for 2011, not this year,so time to save up.
I cant go this year , ive run out of holiday leave.
Also it will give ample time to research some nice places to be and stay.
Nice one Nigel, you have the job of curry master.!!

Yes PLEASE!! won't be misssing this one as bathrooms and all things a pain in the arse will be sorted, well not quite madam will still be here!. (or until she sees this!). So lets go.

via spain

You mention coming back via Spain. There is a 19 hour crossing from Rome to Barcelona for about 120 euros for a motorbike, sleeping in a pulman seat.

Hi Paul,

just a suggestion, this year I took the Autozug from Dussledorf to southern Austria, over night train costing 135 euros to me, bike and a bunk. Saved a load of tyres rubber and fuel.

Can't remember how to spell the place in Austria but its right in the mountains and a great place to start playing in the Mountians.

Just a thought, cuts out the very boring northern part of France.

good ideas

keep em coming.:D
One thing i would like to say,is that if any of you guys are slow riders or are not so steady eddies, you may want to sharpen up your skills, because we do get a shift on,and there is a lot of ground to cover and it wouldnt be fair to put any of you in a position, where you are riding dangerously beyond your skill level, and or slowing us up and spoiling our trip because you are dawdling.
This doesnt mean i ride like a loon, but it does mean i will overtake within the limit ,and when safe to do so.
Please please please dont take this in the wrong light ,i dont want to get anyone hurt, nor do i want to spoil a trip either, for all concerned.
If youre not up speed, get busy and do the IAM or Rospa. There is plenty of time.
On a recent camp out ride out, i could easily spot rospa and Iams and also the sunday riders.
I'm not Wayne Gardner nor Barry Sheene but i do get a shift on when needed.
Dont forget if you are abroad , riding is much more difficult.
I dont want to be the one making the telephone call to your partner.

Very hard not to take this post the wrong way Paul, now to go calm down.

i did say

500 miles a day on the wrong side o the road,a lot of guys havnt had any training since the day they passed their test back in dark ages, including me.
Im part way through a IAM green badge course and its made me a safer and faster rider,And I did say dont take this the wrong way.
I'm only thinking of your safety and well being:comfort.:D
Love always ,Paul.xx:JB

Best I walk away from this one.

Making progress

At least we'll get out of fourth gear then!, only time you really need to keep an eye out when driving on the wrong side is lonely country roads with no traffic and no signs easy to slip back to "normal" and telling them we won the war don't really help!.

well

The first few days are the worst, then you get in the swing of it for a few days, it normally goes wrong towards the end of the trip when peoples get a bit cocky and mess up, i speak through experience of a fellow rider who nearly rode into a rock face cos he got it all wrong.
As i say, dont take it the wrong way, its a suggestion to improve your riding skillset and be able to get there without a drama.
Dont forget there are few bikers here who have returned from the dark side who passed their bike test years ago, when we had little men waving red flags.
Also i may suggest to include a new set of tyres in the budget before you kick off from blighty, they will be bald when we return, guarenteed.
Another thought is to amass a common source of spare bits ie i have an 1150 tps, some bulbs and fuses, mega puncture repair set,air compressor,1/4 socket set, we could do with a spare slave cylinder and a hall sensor.
1200's need a fpc,ignition key antenna,?

And also find us an RAC man so make sure you've paid up before setting off.
I have a spare ingnition wiring harness from switch to main harness.
also be a good idea to take a spare oil sight glass only needs one to go awol and in the brown stuff, I also have a spare final drive bearing and seal and a 12volt compressor which I have used to change rear tyre on my 1150.
