When I recently prised Jabba,s hands off the RT , he informed me that he had had to replace one of the side panels as the original had decided to take unauthorised leave somewhere off the A1. He had bought a replacement which although in perfect condition, is a slightly darker shade of red and off an R80RT. Confuses people cos on one side it is an 80 and on tother a 100:augie

I decided to see if I could do a repaint myself, ( being dad of Syco). search of tinternet came up with RS paints. Nice man there sent me two aerosols. one base metalic and the other the proper colour. seems I have to spray a base coat and the apply the colour in light coats until it matches the rest of the fairing. then give it a couple of coats of clear laquer. He was full of helpful advice too.:rob
I wondered If anyone on here has tried to touch up their bikes in this way, or am I just wasting my time.:blast
I will put some piucs on if it looks a goodun.:D

Local paint shop color matched metallic paint for my K1 glove box lid (another item that enjoys unauthorised leave :blast) and put it in an aerosol can. 3 or 4 coats of metallic then the same of clear and you can't pick it from the original. :thumb

Don't do it Tony!!!

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
You will regret the day you ever thought you could do this with a spray can. There is no way you're going to get even close to the finnish the panel has now.

Get it done proper like by a man 'not too far from your heart' who has all the proper facilities. It would only take a weekend visit for him to sort it out.

Val.

Well the paint arrived. I started by removing the old 80 sticker and lightly sanded the panel down to get rid of the pin striping but left much of the original paint. I then gave it a couple of coats of primer which was then rubbed down. (Pic)

I then started with the metalic base coat. It took a couple of goes to get a nice even finish althoiugh I did manage to get a bit of dust or something on it, Biggest problem was walking away and leaving it to dry and to not try touching it.

I then applyed the top colour coats. this has to be done carefully as you have to judge when the cover is right. the metalic shines through so too little topcoat and the result will be too light and too much will make it darker. not easy. anyway I thought this looked about right

Again nailing my hands to my sides I waited for it all to dry and then to make sure I stuck it back on the bike. As at this stage it is quite flat( as in , no shine) it was difficult to see if I had got the colour right but it looked OK, well maybe a tad dark.

Ok so now for the laquer. this really transforms the whole thing, After three coates it was looking quite good

Again after sitting on me hands all night I went and stuck the transfer on. bit of a job here as it seemed quite old and was difficult to seperate the layers bu I eventually managed to do it and lay it on the panel, it was looking good especially when put back on the bike. In the pic it is not screwed up so looks a bit lower and out of alignment . Only thing now is the pinstripe and I will get some tape tomorrow to finish. Oh and a couple of pics of my new bike:thumb2

Right hand side panel spoils the whole bike !

Only kidding, actually a very good job you've done ( as the tank will have faded with age etc ) and I know what you mean about letting each coat dry without succumbing to the 'touch' or 'one more heavy coat should do it' syndrome.

Top marks, nice bike ( and this model is the best handling of the lot ) :thumb2

nice bike, wouldn't mind one of them myself:augie Paint job looks good.

best handling? I went out with a mate, he was mounted on a 100RS. Perhaps? more a reflection of him than the bike, but I had to continually wait for him, despite not going at my normal "country lane" pace.

Nice job :thumb2

You've inspired me to try my hand at the tatty beak of my 1100.

Thanks for the comments, It does look better than the "wrong" one. I wanted to show how I did it, not cos I know what I am doing but I think these old bikes encourage you to have a go.

Not sure about the best handling of the airheads, Bertha with the Ohlins rear shock was steady as a rock even where the surface was breaking up. The RT does very well but you feel the rough spots and cats eyes. Its a few years since I rode an RT, it was what we had when I was on Bikes at Macclesfield but it was like pulling on a pair of old slippers today, did about 220 miles on the lovely roads around the Devon Cornwall boundary, No traffic, few towns and a happy right hand... ( Ooooo did I really say that).:blast The best bit comming home in pissing rain and getting home bone dry. :thumb

Very happy bunny.

That makes me feel less guilty about having Bertha :thumb

We had a cheeky ride to the Hogroast on Friday afternoon and came back saturday morning. She makes a cracking cheese board Gromit :D

This is a great thread especially as i have a right hand panel that also needs the same treatment, but £40.00 for the spray paint...ouch....think will try and look for a 2nd hand panel that is already the right colour first b4 buying the paint.
