Hi All,

In January, I took the plunge and bought a new GSA with a view to taking SHMBO and myself to foreign climes. After just a few miles, it was not hard to see why the bike’s handling and other capabilities have generated such a loyal following. Although I have now joined its band of biking converts, the bike has distinctly shabby build quality (compared to the 3 Honda’s I’ve owned).

At the 600 mile service, I reported the following:

1) Paint Rub. The paint on the LHS frame had been rubbed away by the cloth of my Rallye riding suit (not even a boot - I wear the trouser leg on the outside of the my boot) and the frame is now starting to rust.

2) Brake Line Corrosion. The brake line banjo bolts, both front and back, have corroded and look as though they’ve ridden the salted roads of a dozen winters. (The bike was treated with ACF50 by the dealer before it left the showroom.)

3) Rocker Cover Chipped. The paint of the leading edges of one cover had lifted and was coming away.

4) Final Drive Rust. There was rust in the “axle tunnel” of the rear wheel.

Points 3) and 4) have now been replaced by BMW as a “gesture of goodwill”.

My exchange of emails with BMW UK Customer Service team on points 1) and 2) has now become exasperating. BMW UK seems to believe that it is not unreasonable for frame paint to have been worn away after 600 on-road miles by the cloth of a BMW made trouser! Nor are they perturbed by the corrosion on the brake lines, instead preferring to state that the German cleaning product (you know, the one which is highly rated by most of the top German bike magazines) hasn’t been tested by them. Disingenuous, me thinks! (I’m still awaiting a list of BMW approved cleaning products which is taking so long to arrive that I’m not yet convinced one exists.)

To provide some context, over recent years I have ridden a Dakar from the UK to Cape Town, bought three BMW suits, done four of the Off Road School courses and put my partner through an extended BMW DAS course. Oh, I’ve also spent a small fortune keeping my M sport car on the road. In short, I’ve been a BMW supporter.

I recognise that this bike will get dropped and don’t expect to keep it meticulous, but I am hugely disappointed about the poor build quality of this so-called “premium product”. The current re-sale value must have taken a hit even though I think I’ve taken reasonable measures to look after this bike (i.e. ACF50, washing it, not riding through excessive salty conditions etc).

Nosing around a few late 2011 GSA’s suggest these bikes often suffer these problem, a lot more so that older GSs. Coincidentally, I’ve also head anecdotal evidence that BMW is reducing the spec of the brake lines in order to keep costs down. Ummm.....

I'm keen to understand if this experience is common to this generation of bikes. Does your late 2011 GS(A) have problems with either corrosion or paint which is about as durable as boot polish?

Thanks for reading and your help,

Reddivedog.

No...........but sounds like yours is getting that rugged look that you so wanted.

P.S. Shouldn't this be in the rant section.........:nenau

I think he is just pointing out his observations and frustrations in a calm and pertinent manner:comfort

No rust on my early '08, three winters and 27K miles. There were some of that vintage though that did suffer nwith corrosion so it seems to be a bit pot luck. Have used ACF50 (winter), FS365 (summer), SDoc100 and WD40 in the odd place.

My 2010 GSA , 30th anniversary model has/does suffer from corrosion, possibly my fault as i didnt ACF50 it from new:blast. Ridden all year round but washed off two to three times a week and looked after, now done 17000 miles and has had the following replaced under warranty.

centre stand x 2 , paint dissapeared from stand and rust visible.
rocker cover, coating flaking off.
front engine cover, coating flaking off.
rear wheel, coating on hub flaking off.

yes bolts and nuts look corroded, as said fantastic bike apart from build quality , tried the Triumph Explorer , really wanted to like it but it wasnt for me so ill just have to stick with the 1200, still could be worse, could be an 1150.:aidan

Reddivedog.

This is an issue on all 1200's - I do what BMW should have done and put some paint ptrotection film around the frame here ;)

Have none of these issues with my 2010 GSA, such a shame though when a bike doesn't live up to expectations :(

I had BMW previously and now , I never had a problem with the rust :nenau
I wash my bike after every ride , I let her to dry then give her a good splash off WD40 all over and let that try for about 2 hours then cover up until next ride :thumb

I bought my GSA in Sept. last year, and have had a very similar experience to yourself, not so much with paint breaking off the heads but certainly very thin frame paint (which i covered with protective film), rusty center stand, corroding bolt heads, cracking screen mounts (the little ones to the sides, not the main screen) and last time i rode it, the fuel sender stuck! I try to look after her as best i can and she is quite low mileage but the build quality is poor compared to my K1200s and all the jap bikes ive owned. Even my LC has better frame paint after 20000 miles!!

I've had none of the above issues on my 2010 Anniversary. Sorry to hear you're not happy.

Had these problems with mine, rocker cover replaced they offered to replace all the rusted fixings. Didn't even bother with the frame, and this is the first bike I've ever ACF'd. But then I ride it smile comes back and think, Who cares this is what I bought it for. Stainless bolt kit, get the frame repainted in the future. Until the I'll just ride and enjoy it.

I have to agree, the finish is not as good as I would expect on a so called premium product, BMW's are good but Honda wins on built quality :augie

rarely cleaned either of mine (06 GSA, now an 11). just coat with ACF50 and a quick rinse off after any ride in salt.

not had any of the above except 4) when i forgot to rinse off, and left it covered in salt for 2 weeks. i'd also missed ACF50ing the inside of the rear axle :blast

both bike look(ed) fairly minging, but come up virtually as new :nenau

my reading of your issues:

1) the frame paint on later bmws is not as good as earlier bikes (i blame the tree huggers), but flapping fabric will wear paint over time. any paint.

2) you didn't rinse the bike off after riding in salt.

3) see above. shouldn't happen though.

4) dealer didn't do a great job with the ACF50.

edit: oh, there was one other bit of corrosion on the 06. i missed the ACF50 from the front disc buttons, and they got a slight bit of corrosion.
