Starter motor

I bought a brand new one of those from Germany for £25, it's perfect and spins up much better than standard so why would anyone piss around trying to fix one by glueing magnets etc:nenau

Yes but all these starter threads don't seem to highlight that brand new one can be bought for under £30:confused:

You're right - I paid about £80 for mine from Woods last year and thought I'd done well...

The eBay item in the OP works out around £70 delivered, so where are the £30 ones then?

German Ebay, the prices vary a lot then some come up real cheap. I did put a link to the supplier on one of the many starter threads:D:thumb

I got one of these of eBay and it only last 6 months so ended up getting one from woods had it on over a year now with no problems

The eBay starter motor the cover on the planetary gears disintegrated I could have just been unlucky

see one of my other posts on starter motors. monkey see, monkey do. A lot of these are straight copies of the earlier model 55 with glued magnets and no spring clips, AVOID:beer:

Well I've just bought one of the German motors in the link above. Despite a few precautionary strip / inspect / clean sessions over the years, the 19 year old starter on my old bus has been getting very sluggish and today it failed to kick it over and reset the clock (started fine next press though).

So I'll find out what they're like soon. Came out at £58 posted (will have to see what happens with duty etc). Seems to be the same motor as that sold by a UK seller for £100+

I bought a copy starter motor once for my 1150 and it lasted less than a week.

I can't see me doing it again until I hear of more reliablity and tougher steel: Yes, the drive pinion snapped. :(

nothing - buying from Germany is no more subject to duty or anything like that than buying from Yorkshire... in fact you pay 1% less VAT - which probably doesn't offset the postage much but.. every little helps.

Duty. VAT and the rest are only paid on purchases from outside the EU.

Be careful with these cheapo starter motors.....they are very different beasts from the real thing.

The metal of the casings seems brittle, is a LOT thinner than the real thing and IMO, they aren't worth bothering with.

I've had two of them fuck up on me in a a year.......one from a company in the UK and the replacement was one of these from German Ebay......the second one I still have in the shed and will take a pic or two of tomorrow, but I will not be trying to save any money by getting a cheap one again.

There are loads of parts that you can swap around with little or no problem, (the Audi fuel pump springs to mind) but a starter motor gets some heavy use and there's a fair amount of energy going through it, both electrical and kinetic.......that makes it vulnerable if it's not as well built as it ought to be.

Ah well, I guess I'll see what happens...

Sorry :comfort

When you get the new one, offer it up to the old one and compare the thickness of the casing and the area that holds the bush on the final shaft that the bendix is shot up.

Mine gets used many times every day no problems at all.....even the magnets don't fall off like on the original 'quality item'...
