I spent a very enjoyable day today fitting most of my Touratech bits.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I 've finished.

1st was the cockpit cover. I found some instructions in English on the US Touratech site. There was also a helpful page on removing the tank, which is actually a piece of pish!

The cockpit cover and Motorrad Concepts GPS mount use the same location and principle to mount. After an initial panic I realised that it wasn't a problem. I had to 'modify' the front bracket on the TT cover and use the Motorrad mount to clamp the front of it in place. Not a great problem but it would have been so much easier with a workshop instead of a stool in the kitchen! I ran the GPS sound cable along the loom at the same time as the accessory socket lead - straight from the battery. The GPS has a short cable made up from the long marine power lead (276C). I fitted a sealed powerlet (BMW) connector and a mono 3.5mm jack to the lead. I just plug the lead into the cockpit cover accessory socket and the audio lead into the jack socket and away you go. There's a 3 amp fuse in the battery lead until I manage to source a 2 amp one.

Other items fitted are mainly 'bling' to be honest. A clear LED rear light, covers for the sidestand switch, rear brakelight switch and heel guard on the RHS. Also neophrene gaiters on the forks, an 'aerodynamic' plate behind the number plate, a cover for the RHS 'hole' in the frame and a steering hardpart in silver. I also fitted dzus fasteners on the tank side panels so as to make them more difficult for toerags to remove and an alloy oil filler cap with a Torx 50 fitting.

Tomorrow I plan to finish off by installing the Brake and Clutch master cylinder reservoir protectors, again a toerag deterrent, the BMW logo security plates, (ditto), the rear carrier support plate and a Titanium Remus Revolution that I got from Ebay for £160 with a very small ding in it. Hopefully the Remus will more than negate the extra weight added by the TT bits!

I'm awaiting an under rack bag from TT for my toolkit and spare bulbs etc (thanks Tobers for the idea) as the Starcom unit is where the toolkit was.

The only item I'm looking for then is an effective hugger, either NWS I suspect or Motorrad. Oh and I should really remove the crud catcher too.

I'm very pleased with the quality and fit of the TT bits.

Now to spend 2005 getting some miles done and meeting some of you lot.;)

Sounds like you ordered 'one of each' from the TT catalogue!!!

:postpics

Saw that Remus can on e bay myself , kicking myself now for dithering ! Interested to see pics of the GPS mount

Just to check, is that the Touratech clear led rear you used? If so ok? No problems with warning lights etc?

I managed to get a hugger from Motorworks. It's made by Ilumberger and seems to fit rather well. If memory serves it wasn't cheap at around £170 but it does seem to do the job fairly well and it looks good.

My Touratech GPS bar and bracket just arrived today. Something to do this weekend...

Yes it is the cheaper Touratech unit. It is a complete sealed unit and therefore not a kit consisting of LEDs and Lens.

It works really well with no warning lights displayed - so the electronics do their stuff.

Really easy to fit too.

Come on get the piccies up....we're waiting to see your handywork!!:)

Been trying for over an hour to get piccies that aren't postage stamp size!

See 'Help' thread.

Peter...if you're still having probs , email them to me and i'll stick them up for you if you like.

Best addy to use is bill.oates*at*ntlworld.com , but pm me too so i know to check.

Here's a few photos showing some of the TT bits I've fitted to the bike over the last 2 days.

1st the GPS mount. Because my GPS is larger than a 2610 it needed the Type 2 mount from Motorrad Concepts. This give clearance behind the screen. The mount is secured by being bolted through the plate behind the front screen mount. This is also where the front of the cockpit cover is secured!

First a few shots of the Motorrad mount and the TT cockpit cover:

The Garmin GPS holder is the marine unit that comes with the 276C. It has a clip on the LHS to lock it in place. This is to prevent the GPS coming free, not an anti-theft device.

The wire in the piccy is the GPS audio lead (held in place by Royal Mail 'lassy' bands), run along the loom under the tank with the Powerlet socket feed from the battery.

You can see the powerlet socket in the cockpit cover to the LHS of the tachometer.

Next a shot of a rider's eye view of the GPS:

You can see the short power lead I made up from the supplied cable. Here's a pic of the audio connection:

What else is there? Well how about the clear rear lamp unit, Remus, rack extension, oil filler cap, tank panel Dzus fasteners and splash guard:

Here's the frame 'plug', brakelight switch cover, and heel guard:

And finally the Starcom1 unit under the seat in the tooltray:

The Remus sounds just superb. Just right. With filtered earplugs it was a pleasant sound indeed.

Items not in the photos are the steering hardpart in tasteful silver, neophrene fork gaiters and I think that's about it.

I took the bike out to Keswick from home this afternoon. A glorious day. I came back via Ambleside and turned left up to Kirkstone Pass. Beautiful. I'm a lucky b*gger to live here in the Lakes. Photos? Too busy riding, another time maybe when we get more consistant sunshine:)

I'm really pleased with all that I've done to make the bike a little different. I've some of Nippy Norman's 'Fastway' footpegs arriving at the end of the week and hopefully the under rack TT bag soon after to complete the package barring hugger!

Oi Peter!

Have you peeled off that nice "Ocean BMW" sticker from the shaft housing? (I'll tell on you!!!)

(Looking good though, about time you got around to publishing some pic's).

Mike.

Looks like you've forgotten to take the baffle out of the Remus!!!

Nice mods though:D

WOW! I won't be getting one of those GPS holders and GPS' then... I'd be knocking myself unconcious at every wheelie...

Nice bits there... Dare we ask for the final figure once it all is fitted, both weight and money... :P :P :D :D  ;) ;)

Joker, seriously though :) the GPS is miles away from the head, at least for me. Maybe the photo gives a misleading impression.

Although, I've got a v long body (and ikkle legs (29")) which makes me tower over it a bit.

Now the scary bit - how much?

The TT bits added up to about £360 and the Wunderlich seat £275. The GPS mount was about £80 and the GPS itself about £700 with all the automotive bits added on. The footpegs will be £70 and the TT rack bag about £30. I got the Remus cheap for £160 and the Starcom was about £145. Oh and the sidestand 'raiser' was about £25.

I think that's it.

Total £1900 approx

I'm not rich but I sold my house and decided to 'invest' a little of it in something important to me - my bike.

Is it all worth it? Well the bike will hopefully not depreciate toooo quickly, I have all the original bits handy if I need to sell it, the GPS sees use in the car and works really well on the bike and is neat (IMHO) to boot.

The seat (and hopefully the lower footpegs to complement it) make the bike MUCH more comfortable, I now sit in the bike as opposed to on it. The sidestand raiser stops the bike leaning at a crazy angle, reducing the strain on same and the rack will help greatly with securing tent etc. securely. Okay some of it's just 'bling' but I'm worth it!

The cockpit cover even reduces the 'buffeting' considerably!

Also working on the bike is an important part of the experience for me.

While out riding the bike and listening to that muted growl from the Remus I'm as happy as I've been on a bike.

With over 34 years of riding that's really something IMHO!:)

Oh and I mustn't let the Missus see this post:D :D

Oh and as for weight, I suspect that the 3 Kg saved swapping the standard can for the Remus is more than the weight of all the 'bits' added up.

More evenly distributed too!

Best thing I've heard in a veeeeery long time!!!

If you're not pleased with what you do, what's the point of all this. :D

Bike therapy is very good; washing it, tinkering with it, riding it, just being with the bike... it's good - get's your mind off other things, and at the end of it you've got a sense of achievement and you're in a much more positive mood...

Well worth it, IMO!
