Bugger my RH fork seal has sprung a leak so I'm going to have to replace it, but having never done this before, what tools do I need to remove the various seals and or clips, and what fork oil do you use in the forks.

cheers

Fork seals on the GS are the easiest ive ever done, piece of the proverbial :D

If you get stuck or need any tools give me a shout, 07821643635

Thanks for the offer Stef, I should be okay for tools, I'll probably have a go first, muck it up then give you call :D

I've still to buy the seals and oil I'll pop into Motorad on Sunday/Tuesday and get some.

cheers

No worries mate, Its a dead easy job, take off front wheel, unbolt lower mudguard and brake hoses, unbolt forks from fork brace and pull down and they pop off, no need to unbolt them from the top yoke :thumb

Or unbolt slider from top yolk and pull out leaving forks still in - no need to remove wheel or brake lines either. :)

As above. No need to undo anything except the nut under the rubber plug at the top of fork leg. :thumb

What crap would that be then Roddy? Very little wear occurs down there. The fork leg slides in a nylon bush lubed by synthetic oil so should all be fine. There is no specified service for fork oil on the GS. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken

I was thinking along the lines of old oil, possible ingress of water, I don't know how long the seals been leaking, maybe grit that caused the seal to fail in first place , I genuinely don't know,

I was more asking a question than making a statement :o . Your probably right what crap would be in the legs when all they really do is control the wheel.

cheers for the advice guys, looks like next weekend will a spannering one :thumb

Never thought of just removing the stantions, tho first time I did mine I stripped the whole lot off, stantions an all, being used to conventional forks. Last time i stripped the forks was to paint them and the fork brace, so I removed the bottom half.

Do the seals come out ok without removing the sliders ?

Hi Guys

those seals are a bugger to get out, 2 hours later I've got one of them  anyway

could I get a point of clarity please, what is the torque setting for the nut at the top of the fork tube is it 22Nm or 45Nm, I'm a bit unsure what bit the manual is refering too.

cheers

Sorry, don't know the torque setting but I did mine back up "mild to medium tight" with a itsy blob of thread lock. Mild to medium is a good cover all torque for most things except wheel bearings and brakes :thumb

wooho :beerjug: another job done, that I've never done before it's always a good feeling when you get this right, eventually since I put the first seal in upside down doh! you live and learn :o

for the record I just did it by pulling the fork tube out and leaving the leg in place, but I did drain the fork oil from the draim plug in the bottom of the leg and I was quite surprised by the amount of crap that was in there.

cheers for the advice guys, next job sort the neutral light.

cheers
