Ive tried a few screens with my 1200GS but ended up with a Givi, IMHO it looks ok and seems to work well, I particularly like the bracing with it compared to some of the others I tried which seemed a bit flappy and unstable, it was about £90.

I did have a bee in my bonnet about the ADV screen though and thought I might get one. Its a lot of money so I just got the little winglets to see what difference they made. They definetly work and with change from £40 they are definetly worth buying, they make a huge difference to your upper arms and chest.

My mate in Coleford went the full nine yards and got the full ADV screen last week and fitted it. I had a go on his 1200 today to compare the two set ups.
Theres no doubt the ADV screen suits the bike better, I think its the angular look that does it but the performance was no different to mine with the Givi and the winglets.(not that I could notice anyway)

Both bikes had the screens set to the lowest setting, same with the seats.

In summary If you want to keep your 1200 looking authentic then pay the extra for the ADV screen but if your not that fussed and want a comparable set up that still looks reasonable go for the Givi with the winglets.

I've got the winglets sitting here in a box waiting for me to fit them. I already have a Laminar Lip fitted to my standard screen and that is a significant improvement. I'm looking forward to a further improvment with the winglets fitted.

Would you be able to post any close up pics of how you've fitted them...?

No problem Schtum I'll get the camera out int morning. Its self evident really but when I fitted mine I looked all over for picutres before the drill came out and couldnt really find any so im sure they'll help a bit.

I'd be interested to hear how much difference they make with the standard screen.

I've just fitted the winglets this evening. It must have taken a good 30 mins all in, apart from sourcing four nuts and washers to replace the ones that the BMW parts guy didn't order for me.

Remembering that my screen isn't entirely standard because of the Laminar Lip which makes a big difference anyway, I'll post a wee review when I get round to going for a ride. I confess to feeling quite disinclined to get kitted up when it's as sticky as this.

Fitted my 'winglets' today, cost £34.24 inc four rubber washers , four bolts , but locking nuts were missing- so I assume that my parts guy has also forgotten these. No problem though cos I had some at home.

I am 6ft 2 and use the tall Nippy Nortmans screen (Secdem I think). That screen transformed the bike for me- but I must tell EVERYONE that these winglet things are a revelation !

Just come back from ride with pillion and even my wife was impressed. Above 60mph she complains about helmet shaking- and tonight we went well above that ( I will say no more ) and she was very very happy :thumb

The bike is also hugely more stable at speed- probably because the rider is not buffeted around. far less arm turbulence.

Screen issues have raised many threads- but just wait till more try these things !

You should also have had four top hat bushes that fit into the winglets from the top. The screws sit inside these. The rubber washers go under the winglets, on top of the bodywork so that they sit off it. I've also used four small washers on the underside, bwtween the nuts and the washers.

Yep done that Schtum- I probably was not good with my description. It was all of the fastening stuff underneath that was missing from my order.

Has to be some of the best $45 I've ever spent. I can actually hear my motor now. OK, it wasn't that loud before but it is ALOT quieter now.

Genuine BMW 12adv winglets made in Germany? and sent to the UK, How far's that 7-800 miles??

Cost in UK just short of £40.00 ( ok £34.24 just seen Grinning's post)

Got the breakdown of costs from local dealer this morning:

Pair of winglets £23.42 plus vat
Bolts and fittings £5.72 plus vat

Totals out about £34 all in and while in the States they dont have VAT I see where your coming from.

Difference is far bigger on other items, PIAA lights for example. :spitfire

Let's see....

C06.32.7.657.966 Bolt x 4 0.25 each = £1.00

C46.61.2.308.594 Washer x 4 033 each = £1.32

C46.63.7.694.399 Bush x 4 0.85 each = £ 3.40

C46.63.7.694.399 Wind Deflector x 1 = £11.71

C46.63.7.694.400 Wind Deflector x 1 = £11.71

Sub Total = £29.14
VAT = £5.10
Total = £34.24

Hmmm..... :(

Had the baby wingie thingies on about 7 weeks, standard screen with the MRA adjustable deflector fitted to the top. i find they stop all of the arm and head wind but not the howl around the lid. Money well spent i think. OpS! the fixing nuts don't come as part of the order cos i think the Adv has a bracket on the frame that takes those speed clips ( threaded thingies ) i made a little Ali plate to go under each side to spread the load with a couple of nyloc nuts.

Fitting the winglets

I was told this morning that if I fit them (with the new Adventure screen I am about to order) it is important to add the support bracket to go under the bit of bodywork - apparently a BMW part- but I am sure a bit of ally (as mentioned) would do the trick and spread the load - rather more than one would imagine at first I suspect.

I just used washers and there does not seem to be any undue flexing I suppose the real issue is what happens when the bike is dropped. Ideally, the wingy things should snap off at the weakest point. If the weakest point is now the supporting beaky panel, then that may be destroyed instead ? :eek
