When

A weekend in about two week’s time.

Where

Top of Scotland on some of the most beautiful scenic routes in the world. A popular tourist route during summer for its magnificent scenery but light traffic this time of year, which is nice. Route recommended by Bike magazine.

Highlights include the Doroch Firth, B9176 “Mountain Circuit”, Ardvrech ruins and Ullapool sea town ‘the most romantic town in Scotland’.

What

Scotland. Bikes. Scenery. Beer. Barbie. Camping or Hotel (as yet undecided).

Camping version:

We will stop a little after Tongue which is at one of the highest points in Scotland. With nothing around we will pitch a camp site somewhere discreet just off the road and try to set up a camp fire.

May do a bit of “camel grass” off-roading in prep for entry into the Dakar next year. ;) It will be optional, accessible for all tyres and abilities and will be based around the camp site. It will also be after the Barbie (because we’ll be tired and hungry from the days riding) so if you intend on getting sloshed during the Barbie you might run into problems.

Hotel version:

The Ben Loyal Hotel, Tongue, is cheap and can accommodate many visitors. We can have a good meal, try out a few of the pubs and check out Tongue.

Who

All GS and non GS riders welcome. All ages, all groups. This is a scenic weekend. You are expected to be self-sufficient unless agreed with others.

Weather

Mild but a little too cold for leathers. 5-10 degrees expected. Comfortable really.

Cost

Approx £100 for petrol there and back from Newcastle. A bit more for the extras you’ll need to bring (see below).

Inventory

Your bike in a reasonable condition.
A small medical kit.
Camping Version:
Barbie: disposable barbeque, foods, beer/spirits (as you wish). 3 litre water (as you wish). Cutlery/plates etc.
Sleeping bag (and roll-mat/inflatable recommended).
Tent – or share if you like cosy.

Distance

1286Km from Newcastle but meeting people on the way up to Conan Bridge. A GPS route is available.

Times (subject to change)

Departure 10AM from Newcastle, stopping occasionally for cups of tea at points of interest.

Lunch 2PM (location undecided).

Arrive 7PM. A838 [camping:past] Tongue.

Sun:

Departure 8:30AM

Lunch 11:30AM. Ullapool
Depart 1:30PM (approx)

Arrive Conan Bridge 4PM

If you intend on coming please indicate which weekend would be best for you.

Oct 28th
Nov 4th
Nov 11th
Nov 18th

I could be up for this, my preference would be 4th or 11th Nov. I definitely can't do 18th.
However it might be worth bearing in mind that the daylight is becoming very limited. Tongue is about 58 deg30' North and sunset on 4th Nov will be about 4.20 or so. There are lots of good places not quite so far N.

Are you the same Andrew Charnley that used to post wild tales of derring do on the SV650 website?

Yeah :o (ahhh, back when I was 19..), but then I got a proper bike ... one that didn't break down or rot as much.

November 4th my preference as well. This is a reknown bikers route which is why I picked it. ;)

Everyone's welcome :thumb

Don't forget to vote in ther poll "Camping" or "Hotel"

Don't forget yir passports we'll be checking them

We'll say 28th is deadline to make sure we can get booked in Hotel if that's the way it's going.

Yeah that's the one :thumb

Updated Garmin GPS file attached, minor adjustments:
1. Taking A68 instead of A1
2. Using the M90 for both legs (MapSource had routed around the A9 for some reason)
3. Ben Royal hotel is a waypoint.

New Point of Interest

We'll set off a little earlier on the Sunday and do the Cape Wrath trip. It involves a small ferry ride then a bus all the way upto the top.

[ Second one down. ]

"This is a trip that many of our guests make during their stay with us. If John O'Groats is the most northerly point then this is arguably the most westerly. You have to leave your car near the Cape Wrath Hotel and then take a small foot ferry. On the other side a mini bus will pick you up and take you out to the lighthouse. The area is also a military training area and if you are into military aircraft then this area is for you. The world famous Sandwood Bay is also accessible from Cape Wrath."

as an aside, just a little correction to a quote in snoopy's last mail.
Dunnet Head near to J. o' Groats is the most northerly point of Scotland. sorry to be picky.
regards

Quote: UKGSER when you ring up with charges being:

£40 Single room B&B
£50 Double room B&B

As part of the deal you won't have to pay the surcharge or deposit until you arrive but *please* be reliable for sake of the site name.

There are 10 single rooms left, because I just booked one.
