To be honest, the problem is with my bottom.

The standard 12GSA seat, whilst much better than the GS's, is still bad after 40 odd miles and agony after 150. I've done 750 miles in the last 2 days and my backside is still sore 12 hours later.

The problem seems to be the pressure point ( apologies for the details) immediately behind my meat & 2 veg that bears my entire (and considerable) weight.

I am convinced that I must invest in a better seat but which one? I had a Sargent on my 1150 GS and really liked it but are they OK for the 12GSA?

Opinions please and any offers of a loan of a seat for trial purposes will be gratefully accepted and rewarded.

Richard

The original seat stinks! The honda xr650r got a more comfortable seat. The TTR600 is like a limousine compared to it. The Kahdeo lowlow (- 50 mm) with much less filling but smart ergonomics feels like a dream compared to the original.

Richard....it sounds like the ergonomics aren't set up right for your body.....there hasn't been an awful lot of moaning about the seat comfort and the place you deswcribe this pressure point as being seems rather far forwards.......

If you imagine your pelvis as a bone shape , it seems to me yours is rotated to far forwards ....normally, it would be back a bit so the weight is taken more on the buttocks rather than er, in your gusset area :D

Before replacing the seat (which can be a real expensive hit and miss affair- different ones suit different arses) I'd try adjusting your ergonomics.....from what you say, I can imagine a set of bar risers that both raise and take back the position of your hands working better......that would in theory make your body more upright which would in turn roll your pelvis back and take the weight off your perineum ;)

PS also check the seams of your trousers...if there's a particularly heavy double seam there, that could be casing the discomfort.....might be worth trying a pair of lycra cycling shorts with the padding in....you might look like you're walking around with a full load in your trews but it could help :D

An Airhawk cushion seems to cure more problems than replacing the seat for more people as well......it would 'float' you off the seat a bit and spreads the wight out :)

i think OP's arse problem is a result of the riding position as much, if not more than, the seat.

footrests too far forward & bars too far back = too much weight on arse = pain in the bum & lower back. he needs to take some weight on his thighs, arms & feet IMO.

a FLAT seat would be nice too. still. it's better than the old 1150 gs seat

Couldn`t agree more with the statement that it`s better than the 1150 GS-A!! That thing nearly crippled me.

I would suspect it`s the position of your lower half rather than the seat which is good enough for all day riding. The cycle pants help here!

The Airhawk is superb and I use it for touring and would throughly recommend it and it`s a cheaper option than new seats!

The riding position is fine apart from the perineal pressure problem.

The only thing that has changed is 3 bikes (1150GS, RT and 12GSA) and the same problem popped up on the 1150GS very quickly. I've done about 2500 miles and whilst the problem is a pain (ptp) it is not lethal. I've tried the moving around bit to mimic bar risers but to little benefit. if I slide back I don't get the problem but then I slide forwards. If the seat were more level then I suspect I wouldn't be rotated forward so much.

I think it is better to find a seat that suits my arse. What others are out there apart from Corbin, Sargent and Kahdeo?

touratech do a seat for the gsa................got a spare one in garage if thats any use???

I have the Sargent, it has turned the bike into the most comfortable I have had. Usually I begin to squirm a bit after 2 or 3 hours, the most I have done on this bike nonstop is 6 hours, no squirms!

sore arse BMW know about it and don't give a sh*t!

Sorry to here about your problem,to cut a long story short i had the same problem and took the mater up with BMW,they wrote back to me saying in writing (letter available on request)there is a problem and customer are buying replacement seats in there droves but they don't want to know!

i have since sold the 1200 and reverted back to a 1150 no problems for me on this seat.

I wrote twice since to BMW to try and resolve the problem the last letter being recorded delivery and two months later still had no reply........i'am sorry to say BMW GB don't give a shit about there customers once you have parted with your cash.......in six years i've purchased 6 new BMW'S .....NEVER, NEVER AGAIN............BASTARDS!!!!!!!!1

I've ruled out the airhawk becasue I have enough trouble getting on the thing as it is without and extra inch to climb over.

I've got the loan of a sargent seat for a week or so and if Janie's allowed to sell he SO's junk I may have a TT one as well.

Time will tell.

Good answer :thumb
Up and back risers and a pair of fastway pegs improved my posture and riding position,I too suspected the seat might be at fault initially :thumb

I can second the Kahedo seat! Much, much better than the original.

Nice bike Dave :thumb

Hopefully will see it in the flash later in the year - I see you got yours in Germany.
I'm still running my ital. plates - maybe it'll confuse the fuzz :D

Shenzi
Which bike?

12GSA White and red of course!:thumb
I bought the low Sargent seats for when I take my wife on the pillion, some of the mountain roads we go on have horrendous cambers and I don't want to fall over with her on the back. My plan was to use the standard seat when riding alone but the Sargent is sooooooooooo comfy.
Mind you, it cost me £450 ish for the two seats but I justified it because we are supposed to throw money at GSs!

Throwing money at it is getting the HEATED seat!

I loved my sargent seat on the 1150 so we'll see how I get on with the loaner.
