One of the guys had a loss of power followed by a rumbling, then it stopped!!!! The 1200 is a year old with about 15,000 miles on it.

Right hand piston failed, anybody else had a similar failure?

Welsh :blast :nenau

Am I right in thinking this is purely a piston disintegration as the valves, though damaged, are stitting in their seats OK?

Not entirely - the exhaust valves have broken off their stems.

No the inlets are on the seats but both of the exhaust valves are gone, so I think something happened on the exhaust valve side.

Of course it does rather depend upon what you mean by stitting :-)

Do you think it was piston then valves then, or the other way round, a valve snapping and destroying the piston?

A real mess anyway, a good excuse to get the motor stripped and whip it over to one of those german tuning shops for abit more go:thumb2

Simce both exhausts have gone and neither inlet, I reckon exhaust valves (camchain problem maybe,) then the piston.

Valve float.....:nenau

How do you get valve float with a rev limiter you may ask ?? Simple, scream it in a gear & then mistakingly, drop to a lower gear. Often happens with older riders used to Brit boxes......:rob

That is one class meltdown, proper good n messy :D
Good job that man :thumb

The pics posted are from my mates bike....sad news!!! The bike has been sent over to BMW S.A for evaluation and we now eagerly await the results.

Never the less, its a sad day!!!!

Sorry to see your bike Welshman - 15,000 mikes or km? Is it standard, or do you have mods on (exhaust, headers, etc.)
You'll see by my address why I'm interested - mine is May 06, but less mileage.
Hopefully BMW S.A. Will sort it out for you.

Nah, if you check above I stated, not mine and Brettp confirmed, just looking for info, any other instances etc.

So where are you in the pretty little Dorp, I am in Woodmead generally Baron and Quail.

I read BrettP's post, and thought he was referring to you.

Presently working in Linbro Park, but we've got no power, so hopefully I'll be off home (Fourways/Dainfern) soon.

Cheers,

Dave.

Dave, fancy meeting you here.....:thumb

Bike was maintained at Auto Alpina in Boksburg. Regaular services etc. Has a full Remus pipe on it and the rest was stock.

We (myself and 8 other chaps) are based onthe east rand and often ride out to Harties etc.
