I’m new to this forum so please be gentle with me! I returned from a trip to France on my Honda VTEC in May; had a few niggles with it; test road a R1200GS and instantly put a deposit on it – it arrives in November :D

In the meantime, the VTEC has been sold giving me an excuse to do non-motorcycling stuff instead for a change.

Anyway, the model on order will come with the factory fitted alarm, heated grips and BMW side panniers. However, having read a recent posting, I’m thinking of buying the inner bags from http://www.maneevent.org.uk/bmw.htm (BMW 12). I’m also considering some Hepco & Becker engine guards, a front mudguard extender and a rear hugger.

Are there any other essentials I should get/consider before I submit the bike to the winter months and can you suggest any links for the any of the above? Also, has anyone plugged in some Klan heated clothing bits’n bobs into the bike yet to see if they work?

Thanks in advance

It was a case of an easy sell during the summer or lay it up for winter 'cos no one would want to buy one at that time of year. Besides, the BM' isn't cheap!

For the life of me I don't understand why you'd want to sell your VFR in the height of summer! Several months without riding? I'd go mad! ;)

He lives in Wales. They don't have summer. Just longer days and slightly less rain....

Yes I see your point, but no bike? I'd be in the loony bin. :D

Let us know when you get it though and what your first impressions are.

I'm in the loony bin.... Luckily I can get out from there once in a while thanks to my girlfriends bike and a friend who's got access to a wide variety of them...

But when it comes to the goodies, I think you're about right - add a GPS and maybe an intercom and you'll be as bland as anyone here :D :D

Are Hepco & Becker engine guards the best ones to go for and what about the front mudguard extender and rear hugger - who makes the best ones?

GPS & intercom probably won't be a bad idea as we intend to go to Norway next year from the South all the way to the top, returning via some other countries. Guess I'd need a screen extender to cut down on the number of mosquitos squashed against my visor! Any ideas on when the best period to go there is baring in mind that a) we don't like mosquitos, and b) want to see the Northern lights or whatever they're called (as you can see we haven't done much research into it yet!)

3 months to go for the bike arrives :)

H&B

Hepco & Becker bars are the only ones that actually do anything on either the 1200 or 1150 and you don't have to take 'em off to do the valve clearances despite what the dealers say, accept no other. Do a search and you'll find some pics.

Pyramid do a front extension and very usefull it is too, stick it on with high adhesive silicon sealant, don't screw it on.

Huggers, not sure for the 1200 who does 'em .

GPS I understand. But an intercom? I want peace when I'm on the bike not some strident vocal assault (no not you darling) wittering on about getting back in time for Tesco. ;)

Oil cooler protection, I have one from Wunderlich.
Without it, the cooler clogs up with insects very fast.

You can always turn it off... Or "forget" to turn it on...

... but I agree... it's nice and peaceful inside my 'elmit... :) :D

The BMW top-case and tank bag are both excellent.

The former has plenty of space for a suit, shoes, docs, etc for commuting. The latter is excellent for longer trips if (like me) you don't want to open the panniers en route.

Both, like the panniers, are totally waterproof however wet it is and for however long. Don't ask me how I know this ...

Keep the front of your new bike clean with one of these...

Hi there...I live in Sweden and ordered mine a few days ago, it looks great and the guy making them is VERY friendly and supporting! I highly recommend them!
I will get my bike in two or three weeks, but I bought this before...

Great to be a new member of this forum!

Hi Chaps,

so far I've bought a protector for the oil cooler (which collects wasps quite nicely), a BMW top box (which I think is great but beware of ordering a key matched lock - I did after getting the box, put the key in the lock, as per instructions, turned the key which removes the plastic sheath then turned it the other way and the lock tabs and springs ejected all over the floor! What a Muppet I am, I lost a spring and don't know what order the tabs go back in), and a Baglux tank harness (fantastic colour match and a lovely piece of kit, even though the website doesn't show a yellow option trust me it exists).

I still need to find some top opening panniers and as I'm only little and short in the arm I'm considering bar risers.

Regards

Reggie

Hey Trancedancer!
You don't happen to live in Fors (near Avesta) do you? I know a guy around there that fits your profile :D

Nice stuff CC, keep it coming. ;)

Further to my honourable friend, CoolCarbon's, last post, photo's of our elusive rear hugger now exist.....

This is just the 'final prototype' and will feature the CNC machined alloy arm, powder coated satin finish silver to match the final drive housing and the hugger itself consists of four layers of Carbon Fibre & Kevlar.

The final delay in fulfilling the many orders we have is being caused by the design registering & patent process which I've decided to do in order to protect my unique designs.

Those of you who have already placed orders will receive your huggers in the next two weeks.

Cheers

Dutch
