Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me if it's possible (and if so, how do I do it) to search for an address using a postcode in the Mapsource v 6 software on the PC? This feature appears to be available on the 2610 itself.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

Pete

If my memory is right then the post code is truncated in the address search box ie AB1 2CD when searched on will only show AB1 2 which I am guessing does not narrow down the point on the map a great deal.

I don't think you can......it's a crap program for searching for anything.......unlike MS Autoroute which will do it easily.

Shame Garmin insist on putting pants software on what are damn goof GPS systems.

This may be a cack handed way of doing it, but it doesn't seem that anyone has a better way. What I do is enter the postcode on www.multimap.com to find the OS Grid Ref and / or Latitude and Longitude (its in quite small print in the Map Section below the map, after you have performed your search).

Once you have the Grid Ref etc, you can use that to mark a Waypoint. Using this method I have found it to be accurate to within 100' approx. Hope that helps - let us know how you get on. ;)

yes you can !

If you click on the binoculars icon (Find Places or CTRL+F) a dialog box opens.

Click on the 'Address' tab.
5th line down is 'Postal Code'

You can only look for the first part of a postcode eg AB12 3XX, so you couldn't use it on its own to find a street, but it's good for finding say, High St, Auchterarder, as opposed to any other High St's.

Re: yes you can !

That doesn't work though Gasman......not on my Mapsource anyway......

If you put in a street name as well then yes, that's fine, but what Peten was asking (and what I need it to be able to do as well) is to show where a postcode on its own is.......try typing in just your postcode and it says 'no item found' which is totally rubbish.

mmm, I'm not sure exactly what he was asking.
Bottom line is, you CAN "search for an address using a postcode" but not a postcode alone.
In fact you can't even close the dialog box with the Street Name box empty.
Not as useful as multimap, then, but may still be helpful in some situations.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help. Yes, I was trying to find a location using just the postcode on it's own, so at the moment using the multimap web search and then entering the lat and long as a waypoint seems to be doing the trick.

This seems to be the only downside of an otherwise great product. Hopefully Garmin will address this in future versions of the software?

The other pain is that you can't find an address by using the full postcode from the unit itself, which would be nice...

Cheers

I use Autoroute to find the position using postcode alone and then look on mapsource. HTH

Unfortunately MS Autoroute and Mapsource seem to use a different datum to fix their mapping dimensions in real space.

Result: Waypoints do not transfer at all well( ....and the further west you go the worse the error as far as I have tried...)

What system are you operating

Garmin Post Code Location finding

I have read all the replies but as Howie says, if you are sat on yer bike with just the sat nav and no computer you are pretty shagged. Is it possible to load the Garmin with the microsoft autoroute software? If not can you use any other more efficient software that would enable more efficient post code location finding? I have just brought the 2610 model and am pretty dissapointed with the usability of the unit as a stand alone tool away from the computer.
All advice greatly appreciated, as I hate techno stuff and would love to just plug and play.
Cheers
