Can chain tensioner fail?

Hi all
I replaced the cam chain tensioner for the new version on my 2002 single spark 1150GS about three years/30k miles ago. However it here is now an increasing rattle at start up which disappears when the temperature gets up to two bars. Although when it has been sitting after a run it also makes a noise for a few minutes before disappearing.

I had the tensioner out and there looks like some wear on in but can it be tested or has anyone else had to replace one? I gave it a clean and once over but made no difference so just asking for views before I buy one to test if it is the part that is. It working effectively.

Bike is now about 41k and otherwise seems to run quite smoothly.

It’s also already the updated tensioner.
