knowing what i know now, i wouldn't be looking at a GS at all, but a KTM SMT or Adventure.

just that while the GS/A is a great bike, and i still miss my Twin Cam sometimes, i wish i'd bought a KTM earlier - way more fun.

Hi Boner, I bought a 2013 LC TE from a dealer for £8395 with top box thrown in. 30k miles so had been used as a commuter. Immaculate condition. It had had the engine replaced for corrosion after 15k miles so the engine's only done 15.
Brilliant bike and I've got a year's warranty so no worries there just yet.

Look around at dealers, you can get some bargains for not much more than your budget.

Engineer, you really are a birk. That's like saying "Don't buy a car unless it's a Bentley". I bought (in my budget range) a '61 GS 2 yrs ago for just under 9 grand with 10K on it. Have put 26K on it since then and couldn't be happier. BTW, just had it 'groomed' by Geoff at Hilltop for a bit of extra fun this summer

Going to play it safe and spend what I have in the bank.

You won't be disappointed with any GS if your drawn to that sort bike in the first place then really it is just about budget.

When I looked a few months ago 6k would have got a nice 08 GSA with about 20-30k. Just think carefully about whether you need the extra fuel capacity an adventure version gives you and whether you can get your feet down the hex head GSA is rather tall.

I'd always buy the newest machine I could afford with cash. Whilst some love the 1150 the 1200 is lighter and more powerful. 1150 GSA SE's are an enthusiasts bike commanding silly prices compared to standard GSA's. you could always buy a much cheaper 1150 GSA and keep some cash in the bank. It will be a stark contrast to the 1200lc you rode but they have their own charm that grows on you.

Bought a 14k 2010 tc a couple of years ago great bike .
Flaws, factor in final Drive bearings ,mine gone at 19k very common problem. The tc engine is a peach.

Much as I love my 1150 I'd be looking at the nicest TC I could find. Been some peaches the last few months on here but now the better weathers here (lol) prices are bound to creep up.
Having said that a chap I know has found a 10 plate GSA with 10k at a dealers for £8000 so there's still a few good buys out there.
