screens

GR ........ there is a long and (mostly) useful link if you go to the sticky thread in this area. Inside that there is an 'alternative screens' thread which has loads of screen optins and views.
I have been looking myself for a year and tried 3 versions - no joy yet. It seems your height is critical as some people love x or y and others hate the same thing.
I am now going for TTech screen with extra spoiler; for me BM Touring was still pushing noise and flies into my visor. I am 6' ft tall.
Worth reading the opinions of the others - this is obviously a flaw with the bike so lots of us have the same question.
Good luck

trip prep

yesterday my bike was in hursts for a new chain and sprockets and fuel tank sensor (warranty). while it was there, they lent me a 12ADV. i actually really enjoyed riding it. it was highly maneuverable through the traffic in belfast (of which there was loads because of the accident on the westlink underpass) and the low down torque is a delight. having said that, it's too big for what i use a bike for. but, I LOVED THE SCREEN! being able to ride visor up was a whole new experience on the bike. when i got back, there was an 800 recovered with the wunderlich ergo vario screen. it looked horrendous compared to my little MRA vario. however, as i'm about to ride across the world, i'm wondering is it worth eating into an already pushed trip budget for extreme comfort at the risk of turning my sweet steed into a motability scooter, or stay cool but noisy? what think ye's? :rob

Wunderlich Ergo Vario

I have just fitted a Wunderlich ergo vario to replace my ordinary ergo in an attempt to attain screen heaven. I have to say that I am a bit disappointed as the improvement is not great. The extra 2 inches does take more turbulence over your head but the top of the screen now sits right on the point in the road ahead where I am looking, rather than just below it (I am about 5ft 9ins). Also, whereas the horizontal split in the screen where it adjusts does lessen the vacuum effect and reduce turbulence overall, it means there is not the same quiet spot to crouch into at motorway speeds (70 to 80 mph for me) that the standard ergo gives you. I think a lot of turbulent air comes in from the sides of any screen and, after experimenting with my hand (!) I am thinking of trying Nippy Normans winglets again as I reckon they will help, (I bought some before but sent them back as the would have interfered with my handguards, however a bit of hacksaw modification may be worth the effort). I hope this info helps you decide Si.

decisions decions decisions.....

Im after a screen, was thinking of the MRA vario, got some r1200gs hand guards to fit on the moro, so will the vario screen work with the handguards or not??? Did think about the metal mule screen too, but like the look of the vario.
And other help on a screen would be fantastic.

Im 5ft 9, standard height f650gs.

thanks chaps. that answers my question. if you said the vario ergo was brilliant, i might've been tempted, but that there's a hesitation still means it's not worth it. i'll stick to the MRA. i had the metal mule/powerbronze previously, it's duff and has horrible wind noise, i wouldn't bother. i don't believe there will be a complete solution for this bike, being more enduro in set up, it's too high a perch compared to the 12adv. appreciate the wisdom though :thumb

Anyone got a BMW Touring Screen for the 800

Question. How does the aluminium brace fix to the upper fairing? The existing mounting point with the plstic 'L' piece has a coach type bolt that it screws to... I bought a second hand touring screen and either they forgot to send the bits or im guessing you just pull out the [brass?] square bolt and turn it upside down...

If you have one this post might just make sense. :augie

cheers

Screen Heaven for the Shorty Bloke

Im a shortarse (5'6" and a bit) with a lowered seat. I have had 5 screens, MM, MRA, BMW Touring and the winner is.... Wunderlich ergo vario.... No more noise... tadahhhhh

Strangely i was too short for the BMW touring screen... If i had a normal size body and a normal height seat it would have been fine... Anyway, ive only had it a few days from someone who only had it a very short while so it's now for sale in the right section.

I'm suggesting a mosaic effect of all the screens on a floor. To enforce your epiphany or moment of clarity (luck :P). Have I mentioned i'm a pictures man? :type

Good stuff Aide

Where did you buy the Ergo from and how much. I am exactly the same as you (a shorty with a low seat) Would appreciate a piccy. Thanks.:aidan

Nippy Normans had it in stock  and its 170 quid... theres a pic of someones on this forum somewhere but just for you...
